Hello everyone,

I’m about to assemble a BILLY bookshelf and have done some research beforehand. I noticed that during assembly, small to medium scratches often appear on the edges and surfaces. Since these are not easy to repair afterwards and don’t look very good, I’m wondering:

What is the best way to prevent scratches when assembling BILLY bookshelves? Are there special tools or methods that help minimize the risk of damage to the surfaces and edges?

I know that the panels are often made of particleboard with a white laminated foil coating, which is sensitive to sharp edges and screws. Maybe you have tips on handling, tool use, or preventative measures like protective films or similar?

I’m looking forward to your experiences and tricks to keep the bookshelf looking flawless after assembly.

Hello Guyme,

to avoid scratches when assembling BILLY shelves, it’s important to prepare the workspace properly first. This includes having a clean and soft padded surface, such as a blanket or foam mat, so the panels don’t rest directly on the floor.

For screw assembly, I recommend using screwdrivers with the appropriate bits to prevent slipping and thus avoid scratches. Especially when using cordless screwdrivers, I suggest a low speed and controlled pressure to protect the surface.

It can also be helpful to cover critical edges with painter’s tape or similar to keep the laminate protected all around. The instructions often also advise inserting the shelf supports first and then carefully positioning the screws.

If you have special tools like protective sleeves or felt pads, these can also be useful. In summary:
- Use a soft surface during assembly
- Use screwdrivers with care and the correct bit
- Protect edges with tape
- Work slowly and carefully throughout

I hope this helps a bit.

Hey Guyme,

I completely understand your frustration—investing time only to end up with those annoying little scratches is really irritating! 😅 My advice is to unpack and carefully sort all screws and furniture parts beforehand. This way, you avoid rushed searching, which usually causes unintended scrapes.

I also always recommend wearing gloves to improve grip and reduce the chance of the panels slipping accidentally. Always place the shelf piece on a clean, smooth surface dedicated just for this purpose. In my case, that’s often a cut-open cardboard layer with a blanket on top. This makes a huge difference and almost turns assembly into a breeze.

That’s super helpful! Painter’s tape works great and can be removed cleanly afterward without leaving any residue.

One more tip: start the screws by hand first. This way, you can better check that everything fits correctly before using the power drill. This prevents the bit from slipping and causing those annoying scratches. 🙂

Good luck with your build! You’ve got this!

Hello Guyme,

I will approach this topic in a more technical and detailed way, as scratches on BILLY shelves often result from small mistakes during the process.

First, it is essential to carefully inspect each component for damage before assembly and mark any sensitive areas to handle them with extra care.

The assembly process itself should be carried out in several steps:

1. Prepare the work surface: A large, stable, but soft surface is mandatory. I use a combination of a foam mat and a multi-layer wool blanket.

2. Tools and aids: Felt pads or foam pieces placed under the components provide additional scratch protection. Masking tape is also very helpful for covering screw points, especially on moving parts.

3. Pay attention to screw differences: Use only the screwdriver recommended in the instructions with the appropriate bit (usually a Phillips PH2 for BILLY) and always start screws manually to apply the cordless drill carefully and precisely.

4. Be careful with edges and corners: Especially with rods and panel edges, caution is necessary. When joining parts, insert a soft protective strip (e.g., packing tape or painter’s tape) between them to prevent abrasion marks.

5. Work as methodically as possible: Lay out parts, pre-position screws, and then screw them in step by step, instead of attempting random assembly.

Absolutely right! I would add: Make sure this surface is completely free of small stones or similar debris — even slight movements can cause scratches.

One more question for you: Which specific steps and tools are you currently planning to use? That way I can assist you more precisely if needed.
