mebeklaHello everyone,
I am planning to assemble an Ikea Hemnes furniture piece soon, but I am unsure which tools are really necessary or useful to make the process as efficient and smooth as possible.
I know that Ikea often provides an Allen key, but I suspect having some additional tools on hand might help to better grip screws or assemble the furniture more securely.
My specific questions are:
- Which tools are especially helpful when assembling the Hemnes?
- Are there tools that significantly ease the assembly or are almost indispensable?
- If you have experience, what tips and tricks regarding tool use can you share?
Thank you in advance for your detailed and practical recommendations!

Hey mebekla,
very good question! To avoid turning the assembly of the HEMNES into a material battle, I recommend the following:
- The supplied Allen key is great, but as soon as you need better grip, a small, appropriately sized metal hex key is worth it – these are more durable and less likely to slip.
- A cordless drill with a hex bit can save a lot of time, especially if you’re assembling multiple pieces of furniture.
- A rubber mallet is also very useful for fine adjustments – especially when you need to gently tap parts together.
And don’t worry, with the right tools, putting it together can actually be fun! Just don’t rush, and it will work out ;-)

Hello mebekla,
I have been using a combination of standard tools along with a few special ones that really make a difference when assembling the HEMNES.
The Ikea HEMNES comes with basic fittings that provide a solid foundation, but in detail:
- The included Allen key is intended for initial assembly but is often a bit short and not very ergonomic. Therefore, I recommend using a longer hex key of the correct size, which provides more leverage.
- For the wood screws or the included Phillips screws, a good-quality Phillips screwdriver is essential—not too small and not too large. A magnetic screwdriver can also be helpful here to guide the screws more neatly.
- If, like me, you value precise and clean work, keep a small rubber mallet or wooden mallet handy to join wooden parts without causing damage.
- Additionally, a cordless drill with adjustable torque can be your best friend—it prevents over-tightening the screws and protects the furniture.
Question: Do you plan to fix the piece to the wall? If so, you will also need a drill plus appropriate wall plugs (anchors) and screws, which are not included in the HEMNES kit.
Good luck with the assembly!

Hello mebekla,
I would like to add to the previous answers and emphasize some basic points that can help when working with tools for HEMNES.
The included tools are always a good starting point, but when assembling furniture, it is often important to understand the entire construction method and use the right tools correctly.
Important tools are:
- An Allen key larger than the one provided by Ikea significantly improves handling.
- A suitable Phillips screwdriver is essential, as many screws are Phillips-head.
- A rubber mallet helps when fitting the wooden parts together gently without causing damage.
- A spirit level can be very useful to ensure the furniture stands perfectly level afterward.
If you plan to attach the furniture to walls, a drill with appropriate wall plugs and a screwdriver bit is recommended—please make sure to consider the wall type carefully!
I hope these tips help you approach the assembly in an organized way and without frustration.

Which tools are especially helpful when assembling the HEMNES?That’s exactly the question you should ask yourself beforehand – a simple Allen key from Ikea often isn’t enough. From my experience:
- A sturdy hex key of the right size is the first step to success.
- Depending on the screws, a good Phillips screwdriver that feels comfortable in your hand is worthwhile.
- A cordless drill with the appropriate bit can really make the work easier, especially if you don’t want to spend hours screwing.

Question: do you plan to secure the furniture to the wall?I would definitely recommend that, especially for larger pieces – better safe than sorry!

A spirit level can be very helpful to ensure the furniture stands straight later on.Absolutely! Especially for tall cabinets, it’s really worth it. So: use not just tools but measuring instruments too, and you’ll be fine!
