Eduardo6029 Apr 2024 18:27Hello everyone,
I recently installed these padding inserts in my Kallax shelf to make the door closing mechanism softer and quieter. Unfortunately, I now have the problem that the doors keep shifting; they no longer sit properly in the hinge cups and sometimes don’t close or open correctly.
I have readjusted the doors several times, but the issue persists. It seems that the padding insert somehow affects the stability of the door mounting or overloads the mechanism. Maybe the material is too thick, or the clearance in the frame is reduced too much by the insert?
Does anyone have experience with this kind of problem? What can I do to secure the doors firmly again without giving up the padding inserts? Are there any special tips for installation or adjustments I could try?
I would really appreciate helpful advice and personal experiences, thanks!

Secondly, consider making the padding insert a bit thinner or filing it down to improve the door fit.

Depending on the material and thickness, padding inserts can alter the gap between the door panel and the cabinet frame, which can shift the hinge mounting or deform the door frame.
I recommend the following steps:
1. Use a caliper to measure the thickness of the padding inserts accurately and compare it to the original gap between the door and the cabinet opening.
2. Check all hinge fastenings for secure attachment. With Kallax, the drill holes can sometimes be very tight, which might cause screws to loosen under pressure.
3. If the padding inserts are too thick, gradually reducing their thickness by sanding or trimming can help.
4. Sometimes, slightly realigning the hinges, for example by shifting them by a few millimeters, can also help. However, this requires patience and a good screwdriver.
Could you specify what material the padding inserts are made of? Foam, felt, rubber? This makes a big difference in terms of spring effect and impact on the hinges.
Hey, that sounds annoying with the sliding doors, but don’t worry, we’ll get it sorted! 🙂
I had a similar issue with my Kallax when I used self-adhesive foam pads as cushioning. That caused significant gap changes!
My advice: try thinner or less thick inserts – sometimes less is more!
And don’t give up – a bit of experimenting, and your doors will fit securely again 🙂
Good luck!

Foam inserts can ... alter the gap between the door panel and the cabinet frameI think it is also important to question the basic hinge mechanism principle in Kallax: Are the doors really designed for such a modification? Because this internal pressure from foam inserts could inevitably destabilize the hinges if the mounting surface is not perfectly flat.
Are the hinges original, or have they been replaced with different ones? It might be necessary to use stiffer hinges, or to find a completely different damping solution, such as external door dampers instead of foam inserts.
The question is whether the approach should be reconsidered instead of just addressing the symptoms.
What does the manufacturer of the foam inserts say? Are there specific notes about compatibility? Without reliable facts, troubleshooting the root cause is pointless.
