Hello everyone, I am about to start assembling my new kitchen using the IKEA Metod system and want to make sure I have all the necessary tools ready before I begin. My main question is: which tools should I absolutely not forget when building the IKEA Metod to ensure a smooth and frustration-free assembly? I have already reviewed the instructions, but practical tips based on experience often help more, especially regarding the right tools that IKEA might not explicitly mention. I would be very grateful for a detailed list and any advice on what I should pay special attention to. Thanks in advance!

Regarding the question of which tools are essential for assembling IKEA Metod, it is advisable to have a basic toolkit with the following core components:

- Cordless drill driver with adjustable torque settings: Essential for fastening screws precisely without damaging the material.
- Phillips screwdriver, preferably size PH2: Commonly required for most screws.
- Hammer: For driving in dowels or small wooden nails.
- Spirit level: For accurate alignment of cabinets and fronts.
- Folding rule or measuring tape: Precise measurements are especially important when assembling a kitchen.
- Rubber mallet: For gently adjusting and fitting the cabinet carcasses without causing damage.

Additionally, a small set of hex keys can be useful, although IKEA usually provides its own tool for the cam locks. It is also recommended to study the assembly instructions carefully in advance, as additional tools may be necessary depending on specific extras or customizations. The delivery from IKEA generally does not include a drill driver, so this tool is an absolute must.

I completely agree! The first time I didn’t have a good cordless drill driver and almost got frustrated because the screws either wouldn’t tighten properly or the wood got damaged too much. Also, I would recommend having an extension cord handy in case the cordless drill’s battery runs out.

Many people underestimate this. I made the mistake of working without a spirit level — aligning the doors afterward was really difficult. For me, it’s one of those tools that isn’t flashy but extremely important; otherwise, even the most beautiful kitchen isn’t enjoyable.

And one more tip from me: allow for patience and enough time, especially if you don’t have experience.

For an optimized assembly of the IKEA Metod system, here is a structured overview with my recommended tool list and additional tips:

1. Preparation:
- Clear the workspace well and lay protective mats to protect the floor.

2. Tools in detail:
- Cordless drill/driver: Activate torque control to avoid over-tightening screws.
- Phillips screwdriver (PH2): For adjustments and smaller screws.
- Rubber mallet: For gently aligning cabinets while preventing surface damage.
- Spirit level: Precise leveling is essential; otherwise, fronts will appear crooked.
- Tape measure / folding ruler: To check dimensions, especially for corner solutions.
- Pencil: For marking drill points or alignment.

3. Special notes:
- IKEA often includes a small hex key in the set, which is important for the cam locks.
- Have a set of small pliers or needle-nose pliers on hand in case dowels become soft or minor corrections are needed.
- A ladder or step stool is necessary when installing high wall cabinets.

4. Avoiding mistakes:
- Don’t fully tighten screws immediately; first insert all screws, then tighten them later.
- It’s best to assemble cabinet carcasses with two people to make handling much easier.

Summary: The cordless drill/driver and spirit level are the two most important tools. The rest supports precise and careful assembly, which is especially crucial for kitchen furniture.

That is generally true; however, you shouldn’t blindly trust every cordless drill driver. Proper torque control is crucial, otherwise you risk either loosening or damaging the screws.

I sometimes question whether a professional’s recommendation to use a drill driver is truly necessary. Some tasks can be done efficiently with a good screwdriver, which also offers better control. Especially when the furniture does not require many strong screws, a quality screwdriver with an ergonomic handle is often just as useful.

Additionally, I would suggest always having a small, precise tool available for exact touch-ups. And since the IKEA method often uses quite standardized connections, small clamps or corner braces can be helpful when working alone to temporarily hold parts in place.
