Hello everyone, I have some Billy shelves from IKEA at home that have unfortunately started to wobble a bit, which is especially problematic when the shelves are loaded. I’m interested in learning about ways to make these shelves more stable without having to buy completely new furniture. Specifically, I’m looking for tips on how to effectively reinforce the simple construction, which is made of particleboard and has a cardboard backing—both to improve standing stability and to prevent wobbling when opening and closing doors or removing heavy items. Are there proven methods or tools (e.g., additional connectors, brackets, special screws, adhesives, etc.) that work well for stabilization? Also, I would like to know if securing the shelves to the wall is absolutely necessary or if there are other practical solutions. Thanks in advance!

It is best to always secure shelves firmly to the wall, as this prevents wobbling most effectively. Additionally, small felt or rubber pads can be attached underneath to stabilize the base.

The classic method for securing BILLY shelves is attaching them to the wall, ideally using the included mounting kit. To reinforce the shelves, metal brackets can also be installed on the upper inside corners. These brackets increase rigidity and reduce the flexibility of the structure. Another tip is to replace the thin plywood back panel or add additional crossbars, which helps reduce lateral twisting. This is especially useful when the shelves are heavily loaded. Therefore, removing or perforating the thin back panel is worthwhile to install a more solid back panel.

That sounds very helpful. Are there specific types of brackets that work best, or is a simple small corner brace from a hardware store sufficient? Perhaps someone has experience with the installation, especially on how to do it without causing any damage? Replacing the back panel sounds quite complicated since I’m already using the shelf.

I also like the idea of using rubber pads underneath—do they really help prevent sideways tipping or just reduce wobbling on uneven floors?

To effectively reduce the wobbling of BILLY shelves, small brackets made of galvanized steel with minimum dimensions of 30x30 mm (1.2x1.2 inches) are recommended. They are small enough to be discreetly installed but provide sufficient stability. It is important to attach them to interior corners, for example, at the top rear of each cabinet section.

Regarding installation: Pre-drilling is necessary to avoid damaging the particleboard. Use short, fine wood screws. Alternatively, a gentle mounting adhesive can be used as supplementary fixation, but the hold is less permanent.

Rubber pads on the floor stabilize contact with the surface, reduce vibrations, and prevent minor tipping movements, but they are not a comprehensive solution for lateral wobbling. Wall mounting or additional cross braces work better in this case.

Oh yes, I had the same problem! The metal brackets on the top corners are great! Additionally, I screwed in a thin wooden panel at the back – that really made the shelf stable. 🙂 And definitely use wall anchors, they provide safety and peace of mind when opening the doors!! I really recommend doing this consistently – it makes using the cabinet enjoyable again! Good luck to you too :-)
