Hello everyone, I am planning to remodel and redesign my Ikea Platsa shelving unit. I have a question: which paint color works best for updating the Ikea PLATSA to make the furniture both modern and versatile? I’m not only thinking about the shade but also the type of paint: should I choose traditional wood colors, or are matte or glossy finishes more suitable? Are there specific recommendations for preparing the surface before painting? I want the shelving unit to be as durable and resilient as possible, so advice on the right paint would be very helpful. So, which paint would you suggest for remodeling the Ikea PLATSA and why?

This is a very good and detailed question, as the choice of paint and surface preparation for Ikea PLATSA shelving units indeed has a significant impact on the final result. Basically, PLATSA is usually made from an MDF panel with a melamine coating, which means that conventional paints often have poor adhesion without special preparation. Therefore, I recommend first sanding the surface with fine-grit sandpaper (180-220 grit) to roughen it up. After that, applying a primer with adhesion-promoting properties is essential. Regarding the type of paint:

- For more modern and minimalist designs, I recommend matte water-based paints, as they reflect less light and give the furniture a more elegant appearance.
- High-gloss paints turn the unit into a real eye-catcher but tend to show fingerprints more clearly.
- Wood tones are rather unusual for PLATSA since the material does not have a natural wood character; achieving a wood look with veneer foil or special stains is possible but requires more effort.

What kind of surface are you envisioning—something durable for a children’s room or stylish for a living room? The type of paint used (e.g., acrylic vs. nitrocellulose lacquer) also matters in terms of environmental friendliness and odor.

I would like to add to the previous points by addressing the question of color from a functional perspective. The color should not only be visually appealing but also durable against mechanical stress — for example, scratch resistance and impact resistance are important for a frequently used shelf.

Furthermore, the effect of color on the perception of space is relevant: light colors such as white, light gray, or pastel shades visually enlarge the room and work well in smaller spaces, while darker tones make the piece of furniture stand out more.

Another point that is often underestimated is that the color should be compatible with the rest of the interior design to create a harmonious overall impression. I am skeptical about high-gloss finishes, as they often show scratches in everyday use and are less forgiving.

Does anyone have experience with specific paints that work well on melamine? Or experience with a pretreatment process that particularly improves adhesion?

For PLATSA, I recommend a matte, water-based varnish. It is important to sand beforehand and apply a bonding primer. Achieving a wood look is difficult, so it is best to keep it modern and simple.

Yes, definitely. Melamine is naturally very smooth, so sanding is the very first step. After that, I recommend a bonding agent, such as lacquer or special melamine primers designed specifically for these resin-coated surfaces. They create a bonding layer between the base material and the topcoat. Without this intermediate step, paint adhesion is very difficult.

After the primer, apply the paint—water-based acrylic paints are best because they cure well and have less odor.

It’s important to allow proper drying between each step. Also, after painting, apply a thin protective clear coat that offers UV and scratch resistance. This helps keep the surface durable.

For PLATSA, I prefer using RAL colors with a matte finish because they are neutral and blend well with many types of furniture.

Important: Start by sanding with fine-grit sandpaper, then apply a primer. This greatly increases durability. I also recommend using a roller instead of a brush to achieve a smooth surface with fewer visible brush marks.
