Hello everyone, I have the following problem: My IKEA KALLAX shelf rattles every time I open or close the window next to it. It seems that the movement of the window sash causes small vibrations that make the shelf rattle. The noise mainly comes from the compartments with the shelves – these seem to move slightly, even though they should be firmly in place. My question is: What is the best way to fix or dampen the KALLAX shelf to eliminate the rattling? Are there any special tips to stabilize the shelf or prevent the shelves from moving? I would appreciate any ideas, even simple solutions like sealing tape or other aids.

Hello genobo, first of all, your concern is understandable – KALLAX shelves are unfortunately known for having some rattling noise, especially when the shelves are only loosely inserted.

To prevent rattling, you can cushion the shelves on the sides with self-adhesive felt or foam rubber strips. This stops the shelves from hitting hard against the side panels or the back panel. Small silicone pads or rubber bumpers on the corners often add stability as well.

It’s also important that the unit stands perfectly level – so you might want to check if it wobbles slightly. Small furniture shims can be used underneath to compensate for uneven floors.

I would suggest trying these simple measures first before taking the shelf apart. If you want, I can explain in more detail how to apply the felt strips optimally. 🙂

Hi, simply glue foam rubber strips to the shelves and the back panel. This will immediately reduce the rattling noise.

Even easier: place rubber or felt pads between the shelf and the inside of the cabinet. This prevents the shelves from slipping and reduces rattling.

Thanks in advance for the tips! I have one more question: Could it also help to fix the shelf to the wall with screws? The window is right next to it and opens slightly against the shelf, so it probably moves a little. Is it dangerous for the shelf if it is screwed to the wall? And what would be the best way to install the screws without damaging the shelf?

Yes, this is one of the safest ways to prevent vibrations and movement, especially if the window presses sideways against the shelf.

It is important that the attachment is stable. I recommend using special metal furniture brackets, which you can fix to the top of the shelf frame and the wall. Choose screws that do not go too deep into the wood to avoid damaging the material.

Before drilling, you should check whether the wall is drywall, concrete, or brick to select the correct wall plug.

If you want to avoid damaging the shelf, you can also use screws with adjustable spacers. These allow some play, so the fixing is not too rigid and the shelf is not under tension.

In addition to this fixing, I still recommend using soft pads on the shelves to prevent noise when sliding them in and out.
