Hello everyone, I recently put together an IKEA Platsa system for my apartment and find the basic concept quite flexible. However, I am looking for ways to increase storage capacity, possibly through custom modifications or additional components.

Has anyone here made their own extensions or adjustments to the PLATSA furniture to effectively maximize the available storage space? I am particularly interested in clever add-ons, extra interior organization options, or conversions that go beyond the standard IKEA components.

I look forward to your suggestions and experiences!

I completely understand your search, Begotthilf. I also liked the PLATSA, but felt there was still room for improvement.

For example, I reinforced the back panels with thin plywood and built my own shelves, which I installed at an angle to create more stackable space for smaller items. It might seem time-consuming at first, but it makes the cabinet more flexible and practical.

At the same time, this approach helps to better accommodate differences in item sizes. Maybe it’s worth trying something like this for you as well? I found it interesting to incorporate personal needs into the design.

Hey, super interesting topic! I love IKEA and have already tried out quite a few things with PLATSA. 😁

One idea I implemented in great detail is using special crates and boxes which I attached to the inside walls with hook-and-loop tape. This way, I can store small items almost "floating," and it still stays neat.

I also built small shelves behind the doors – basically "two-level" storage. If anyone wants more details, I’m happy to help.

Let’s collect creative hacks together – organizing becomes a lot more fun that way! 🚀

Wow, customizing PLATSA with more storage sounds great! 😎
I simply chose the wall cabinet version with narrower compartments and screwed small hooks onto the back.

Whether it’s keys, cables, or those little handy items, everything is immediately within reach.

And honestly: sometimes it’s the little things that make large furniture really cozy and functional. 😉

An interesting question, Begotthilf.

I recommend focusing on flexible interior arrangements for your modification. A proven method is to use custom-made shelves made from plywood or MDF, which can be tailored to your specific needs. Attaching them with angle brackets to the side walls of the PLATSA system ensures a stable installation while allowing adjustable heights.

It is also important to carefully calculate the weight of the items you plan to store, as the original PLATSA shelves have limits.

In addition, I have successfully integrated so-called “pull-out” modules—drawers on sliding rails that are homemade and significantly improve access to deeper compartments. For construction, a carcass made from 12 mm (0.5 inch) thick wood panels is recommended, as this provides very good load-bearing capacity.

However, I am curious: What exactly do you want to store? Because the best modification largely depends on how the individual items need to be stored.

Good question, thanks! Primarily, it’s about documents in folders, some craft materials of various sizes, and several kitchen utensils that are not used often but should still be easily accessible.

Drawers sound very promising; maybe I’ll look into that. I also really like the idea of angled shelves from JAFUHAU for the small items.
