Hello everyone, I recently bought a Platsa system from IKEA, which is known for its practical wooden panels. My question is how to best care for these wooden panels to keep them looking good for as long as possible and to prevent wear or damage from moisture. I am especially interested in cleaning (which products are suitable?), protecting the surface, and preventive measures to avoid discoloration or warping. It would also be important to know whether it is better to use a special wood care oil or simply a wood preservative, or if IKEA has its own recommendations. Does anyone have experience with the optimal treatment of these wooden panels without affecting the color or texture? Thanks in advance for your tips!

I felt the same when I first set up my IKEA shelf. I quickly learned that gentleness is key – using harsh or abrasive cleaners can damage the surface.
What has helped me is always using a soft, slightly damp cloth with mild dish soap for cleaning, followed immediately by wiping it dry with a clean cloth.
In addition, regular ventilation and avoiding direct sunlight have reduced discoloration for me.
I am still unsure whether the panels really need to be treated with wood oil since the original surface is already sealed. Maybe others here can share their experiences? I would be glad if you let me know what you find out for yourself.

Here are some factual tips for caring for IKEA PLATSA wood panels:
- Clean with a neutral cleaner, avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners
- Wipe off moisture immediately to prevent swelling or warping
- Direct sunlight can cause fading; therefore, avoid exposing the panels to direct light for extended periods
- Wood oil or wax is generally not suitable, as the surface is factory-finished with lacquer or foil
- In general, follow IKEA’s care instructions: they usually state that moisture damage can be prevented through proper handling
I also recommend treating stains as soon as possible and avoiding aggressive products to protect the surface.

I once tried to polish a wood panel from my PLATSA with wood oil, and it was a bit like trying to handle a basketball with oily gloves – not only does it look strange, it also leaves annoying stains. It’s better to treat it gently for proper long-term care.
A little tip from me: for daily maintenance, usually a dry microfiber cloth is enough to keep dust and small dirt particles away. For a bit more care, a spray bottle with water plus a drop of mild cleaner helps – but not too wet!
Oh, and I always try to avoid placing hot objects directly on the panels, otherwise you quickly get unpleasant heat marks.
I find that a relaxed approach, without immediately reaching for wood care products, is my key to success here.

To be more specific: IKEA does not provide a special care guide for PLATSA, so do you mainly follow the standard care recommendations for painted wood parts? I’m asking because I want to avoid damaging the protective coatings by using the wrong products.
So far, you’ve mostly mentioned a combination of mild cleaner, soft cloth, and quick wiping.
One more specific question: How is the moisture absorption – do the panels swell significantly when exposed to moisture, or is that not an issue due to the surface material?
It would be great if someone could share specific long-term experiences with the wooden panels of the PLATSA system. Thanks in advance for your help!
