I have several BILLY shelves from IKEA at home that I use regularly. Unfortunately, some stubborn stains have appeared on the white surfaces, which cannot be removed with normal wiping. My question is: How can I properly clean BILLY shelves when dealing with stubborn stains without damaging the material or the finish? Are there any specific cleaning products or methods that are particularly effective yet gentle on the surface? I would greatly appreciate practical tips, especially for older or more heavily used shelves.

Isopropyl alcohol at 70% concentration is considered relatively gentle but should always be applied sparingly with a soft cloth. Extended contact time is not recommended. The alcohol is intended to remove stains without damaging the melamine surface; however, too high a concentration or aggressive rubbing can cause the surface to become dull.

Always test first on a visible but inconspicuous area.

e.g., red wine or marker stains

For red wine stains, applying cornstarch immediately can sometimes help to absorb the stain. After it dries, you can vacuum off the residue and then wipe the area with water and a mild detergent.

Isopropyl alcohol works best for marker stains. Avoid rubbing too hard and make sure to remove any remaining alcohol thoroughly to prevent surface damage.

A tip for stain removal: For stubborn dirt, a damp cloth with a little toothpaste (without gel) can help. You can gently polish with this without damaging the surface.

For maintaining the shelves, I recommend avoiding overly wet or abrasive cloths. Wiping with a damp cloth is sufficient. After cleaning, you can polish with a dry cloth.

This is actually a good tip; toothpaste also has a mild abrasive effect, but you shouldn’t rub it too hard. For sensitive melamine surfaces, this is a practical alternative to using a rubber eraser.
