Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought the Kallax shelving unit from Ikea and use various baskets inside it for storage. However, I noticed that the baskets often slide back and forth, especially with light contact or when taking something out. Does anyone have experience with non-slip pads or liners specifically designed for baskets in Kallax compartments?

I’m looking for something easy to insert, not too thick, and that provides reliable grip to prevent the baskets from constantly shifting. Are there any particular products or materials that work well for this?

I would really appreciate any tips or suggestions!

Hello Deoemre,

I find your question very interesting and important if you want to make the most of your Kallax system. Basically, there are several ways to create non-slip surfaces for baskets. Materials like rubber or silicone mats, which can be cut to size, are commonly used. Non-slip pads, similar to those used under furniture, can also help.

A particularly practical option is self-adhesive non-slip pads. You can cut them into pieces and stick them to the bottom of the basket. Just make sure the surface of your baskets and the shelves are clean and free of grease to ensure the best adhesion.

Another point: some users swear by foam rubber inserts or thin foam mats with a non-slip backing, cut to fit and placed as liners on the shelf. These materials absorb slight unevenness and reliably prevent slipping.

One more tip: if you use baskets made of wood or with a smooth bottom, it’s worth checking if the material is compatible with such pads, for example, that it doesn’t swell or react poorly.

I’m also interested in what kind of baskets you use, as weight and shape also matter. For example, fabric baskets often provide less support due to their flexible structure compared to wicker baskets made of wood or plastic.

Best regards!

Hello Deoemre,

I can completely understand how annoying it is when the baskets keep sliding around in the Kallax compartments. I had the same issue and therefore looked for a solution myself.

That’s exactly what I tried, and I’m quite happy with it, although after a few years the adhesion does weaken somewhat. But at least it’s a good start. It really helps if you cut the mats to size carefully and apply them properly.

I did consider foam rubber briefly, but I was a bit concerned about the thickness. In the end, thinner non-slip mats that don’t add too much height have proven the best compromise between grip and ease of use for me.

If you find something especially durable, I’d love to hear about it. 🙂

Wishing you success with your project!

Deoemre, buy non-slip rubber mats, preferably self-adhesive. Cut them to fit the shelves, and you're done. It's inexpensive and works great for me.

One more thought on the topic:

Have you ever considered a completely different approach? For example, baskets with integrated rubber feet or small pads on the bottom? Some manufacturers offer baskets with non-slip bases, which reduces the need for additional pads on the shelves.

I completely agree! With some materials, even a slight touch can shift the baskets easily – in those cases, small rubber stoppers on the bottom of the baskets help a lot.

Also, if you often remove the baskets and put them back on the shelf, a combination of a non-slip surface and floor protection works well to minimize wear and tear on both.

How often do you take the baskets out of the Kallax? That also affects how sturdy the solution needs to be.

Best regards!
