Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Kallax shelf unit from Ikea and chose the version with shelves made of wood-based panels for a bit more stability. What really frustrates me now is that several shelves have broken after a short time, even though I consider the weight I placed on them to be normal and within the limits specified in the product manual.

My main question is: What have your experiences been with complaints to Ikea in such cases? Is a claim accepted if the shelves break despite proper use according to the guidelines? Or are there usually issues with goodwill or customer service?

I would appreciate it if you could share your experiences or tips, especially if anyone else has had similar damage and how the return or replacement process went.

Thanks!

The Kallax ranges are made from particleboard, with the maximum load capacity of the shelves typically between 13 to 15 kilograms (29 to 33 pounds) when evenly distributed, depending on the dimensions.

Breakages can result from overloading, material defects, or improper assembly. In case of correct use, the warranty usually covers deviations from the intended condition without problems.

Ikea generally takes complaints seriously, especially when it is proven that the load limits were respected. Tip: Keep the receipt, take photos of the damage, and file a complaint directly at the store or online.

Hey, that sounds pretty good at first. 🙂 Especially considering how many Kallax shelves are probably overloaded at some point – I mean, who hasn’t turned their Kallax into a last-minute book statue? 😉

Still, you have to be realistic: if you really haven’t overloaded your shelf, Ikea should accept the claim without any problems. It’s definitely worth a try!

Thank you for the clarification, gekira. You mention material defects or assembly as possible causes.

I followed the assembly instructions recommended by IKEA, and all parts were properly fitted. There were no improvised brackets or anything similar.

The load was also significantly below the maximum load described in the manual, sometimes only about 10kg (22 pounds) per shelf.

Could it be that the quality varies between production batches? Has anyone here noticed any fluctuations?

That is possible; such variations do occur in the manufacturing of particleboard and engineered wood products.

It would be interesting to know whether the material itself was the point of failure in your case, or if the construction failed (e.g., weak spots at edges or joints).

Ikea is generally accommodating, but long-term quality issues can only be identified and addressed through sample testing and extended claims.

Have you already contacted their customer service?

Hello Namatra,

I can assure you from experience that Ikea has a fairly customer-friendly return policy, especially with Kallax, as long as the load limits have been reasonably observed.

It is important to document the damage as accurately as possible and provide the receipt.

Sometimes there are differences depending on whether you bought it directly in-store or online – usually, customer service is easily reachable by phone.

If you have been using the shelf for a while but the damage only appeared recently, you can also ask about a goodwill arrangement, which Ikea has often approved in the past.
