Hello everyone,
I have a problem with the IKEA Metod drawers that I installed a few weeks ago. The drawers do not slide properly; they sometimes stick or can only be opened and closed with significant effort. Specifically, these are the Metod fronts with the Blum drawer slides underneath.
I have already checked whether the drawers are properly aligned and if there are any foreign objects in the sliding system, but that does not seem to be the case. The drawer slides themselves operate quite stiffly, and in some spots there is noticeable sticking.
My question to you: What can I do if IKEA Metod drawers are not sliding smoothly? Are there any tried-and-tested tips or adjustments I should check or apply? Do I possibly need to replace the drawer slides completely, or is there a better maintenance or adjustment procedure?
I would appreciate any advice or shared experience!

I’m quite familiar with issues related to Metod drawers and can offer some helpful tips on what to check:
- First, make sure the drawers are properly mounted. Blum slides often have small locking mechanisms that need to be correctly engaged.
- The sliding rails should be free of dirt or wood chips. Even if you’ve already checked, small splinters can sometimes hide inside.
- A common mistake is that the drawer itself is not installed perfectly level or straight. Use a spirit level to check, as even slight tilts can cause sticking.
- Use lubricants sparingly but precisely. I prefer special silicone sprays or greases designed for slides. Never use kitchen oil or grease!
If all this is checked and the drawer still sticks, often a complete replacement of the slides helps—especially if you are dealing with cheaper aftermarket parts. IKEA original parts are usually more durable.
I hope these points help you. If you have more details, feel free to reach out!

And even if this sounds like a secret tip: occasionally applying a bit of silicone to the sliding rail system can be the difference between “stuck” and “runs smoothly.”
Important: stay patient. These small IKEA components can really test your patience, but most of the time they can be fixed.
Let’s be honest, the Metod drawers are basically Ikea’s modular systems, so you don’t expect much high-tech, just basic functionality. When they don’t operate smoothly, it’s often because Ikea prioritizes cost savings over user comfort in the design.
Regarding the issue of misalignment: sure, that’s often the cause, but why can’t Ikea design tolerances so that the drawers still work even if the installation is slightly off?
My advice: save yourself the hassle of fine-tuning the alignment and invest in higher-quality drawer slides. These standard Ikea rails just aren’t sturdy enough by design.
Just my opinion, but I think you should be able to expect a product from a premium furniture store to at least operate smoothly!

For the METOD drawer systems from IKEA with Blum slides, the following procedure is recommended:
- Check if the drawer is correctly assembled and aligned. Small deviations in level often cause sticking.
- Inspect the runners for damage or contamination.
- Use silicone spray as a suitable lubricant; avoid oil-based or grease-based products.
- Adjust the drawer fronts using the adjustment screws to ensure proper alignment.
- If problems persist, replacing the runners is advisable, as wear or manufacturing tolerances may be the cause.
These key points correspond to the technical recommendations for the METOD series and proven practical cases.
