Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some Ikea Hemnes furniture and would like to know the best ways to prevent damage to these pieces. I am particularly interested in recommendations for proper wood care, avoiding scratches, and how to prevent potential moisture issues.

Since the furniture is made of solid wood, I am also wondering if there are specific surface treatments or finishes that are advisable to ensure long-lasting durability.

Perhaps someone has experience with the characteristics of the HEMNES series and can offer tips on how to avoid cracks, warping, or color changes. Thanks in advance!

To prevent damage to Ikea HEMNES furniture, I recommend the following points:

- Avoid exposing the furniture to direct sunlight, as UV rays can cause the wood to fade.
- Prevent moisture, especially by not placing wet objects on the surfaces.
- Regularly maintain the furniture with a suitable, mild wood care product that protects the surface without damaging it.
- Keep the furniture away from radiators or heating units to avoid the wood drying out.
- For heavier use, transparent water-based protective coatings can be applied; these are breathable and improve the wood’s protection.

Additionally, gentle cleaning and preventing scratches by using felt pads under decorative items will extend the furniture’s lifespan.

First of all, it is important to understand the basic structure and surface condition of the HEMNES furniture. Any damage often results from insufficient moisture control and mechanical impacts. Here is a detailed proposal for damage prevention:

- Monitor wood moisture: Solid wood furniture reacts to changes in humidity by expanding and contracting. Ideally, indoor humidity should be kept between 45-60% to avoid cracks.

- Surface sealing: The HEMNES pieces are typically finished with paint or lacquer coatings, which are not very durable. An additional treatment with high-quality beeswax or wood oil can make the surface more resistant to scratches and moisture without altering the natural appearance.

- Assembly & load: Improper assembly or overloading often causes warping or breakage. It is worthwhile to work carefully during assembly, follow the instructions precisely, and use the furniture only within the specified maximum load capacity.

- Protection from foreign particles: Dust particles can act as abrasives that damage the surface over time. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and using felt pads under heavier items is recommended.

- Temperature and location: The furniture should not be placed near heaters or air conditioners to minimize thermal stress.

Finally, an interesting question would be: Do you use the furniture heavily in daily life, or does it serve mainly a decorative purpose? This helps to tailor care and protection measures individually.

Good question, thanks! The furniture is regularly used in everyday life, especially in our living room for surfaces, small cabinets, and dressers.

I especially want to avoid discoloration and scratches, as the dressers are often used for storage.

Would you recommend wax or a protective varnish in this case? Should I prioritize maintaining a brilliant appearance or emphasize durability and protection? I’m also interested in any potential compromises.

For everyday wear on solid wood furniture like the Ikea HEMNES, I recommend a balanced approach:

- Water-based protective lacquers offer very good protection against moisture and mechanical wear. They tend to create a more durable surface but can slightly alter the color tone or produce a glossier finish.

- Wax or conditioning oils maintain the natural look and matte feel of the wood but need to be reapplied more frequently. The protection is less durable but suitable for furniture that is not heavily used.

So, if a dresser is used regularly, a clear matte protective lacquer is often the better choice because it reduces maintenance and better protects the furniture against scratches. Touch-ups later on are easy with light sanding and recoating.

It is also important to clean the furniture regularly and avoid sources of moisture (e.g., wet cloths or glasses without coasters) directly on the surface.
