Hello everyone, I am currently in the process of redecorating my room and would like to use the Ikea Platsa system because it seems very flexible. However, I’m unsure how to plan the best dimensions for the individual modules so that everything fits perfectly in the room, provides enough storage space, and doesn’t look overcrowded.

My room has an area of about 15 square meters, with a ceiling height of 2.50 m (8.2 ft). I have roughly measured the wall where I want to place PLATSA, but I would like to know which factors I should consider to assemble the ideal module size and combination.

How do you plan your PLATSA dimensions? Are there any tools or tips for optimal space utilization? And how do you take into account possible doors, windows, or radiators? I look forward to your experiences and advice!

As a general recommendation, carefully measure the exact dimensions of the room, including all obstructive elements such as doors, windows, and radiators, and record them to the nearest millimeter.

It is important not only to consider the pure wall surfaces but also to account for the space needed for opening doors or cabinet doors (swing or extension areas).

Ikea offers an online planner for PLATSA that facilitates room planning and shows modular combinations. However, I suggest first creating a sketch on graph paper with a millimeter scale and then transferring it to the planner to better visualize how all components fit together.

Take measurements with a tape measure, then select only modules that fit precisely. Avoid choosing ones that are too tall, as overhead storage is often impractical.

Plan for windows and radiators in advance to avoid issues during installation.

To plan the best dimensions for your room using Ikea PLATSA, you should structure the process in several steps:

- Step 1: Measure the room precisely, including distances to windows, radiators, electrical outlets, light switches, and doors. Also take into account the swing radius of room doors and cabinet doors.

- Step 2: The ceiling height is important for choosing the module depth (e.g., 35 cm (14 inches), 58 cm (23 inches)) and height. PLATSA offers several standard heights, typically 64 cm (25 inches), 128 cm (50 inches), 192 cm (75 inches), etc., which can be stacked.

- Step 3: Sketch where storage is needed (e.g., clothing, books, electronics) and select modular units accordingly. The depth should meet the storage requirements.

- Step 4: Use the Ikea planner to try out different configurations. Look at at least 10–15 different combinations to find the ideal dimensions.

- Step 5: Always remember to check door swings and ensure accessibility.

Do you already have a rough idea of what exactly you want to use the storage space for?

Thanks for the tips so far, they are very helpful. To answer PLOMA’s question: My main goal is to store clothing, a few books, and some hobby and technical equipment in PLATSA.

I am concerned that I might get confused with the different heights quickly, as I have read that some modules are only practical within certain height ranges.

Would you recommend stacking modules vertically or choosing wider combinations? And are there any good general guidelines for integrating drawers and open compartments effectively into the design, especially with PLATSA?

Regarding your question: When choosing between height and width, it depends on the intended use and the available space. Generally, the following guidelines apply:

- Tall units provide more storage on a smaller footprint but can be less accessible, especially the upper sections.
- Wider units are easier to access but require more wall space.

For clothing, closet elements with drawers and hanging rods at medium height (about 100-150cm (40-60 inches)) are recommended. Open compartments work well for books and decorative items.

A rule of thumb for drawers: place them at middle or lower levels, as they are more comfortable to use.

For optimal use: combine different modules, e.g., lower drawers, middle shelves, and upper closed cabinets, to make efficient use of the height.
