Frederik327 Oct 2020 10:07Hello everyone, I am currently considering painting an IKEA Malm piece of furniture myself to make it more personalized. My main question is: Can I paint Malm furniture on my own without making mistakes, even though I have no professional experience with painting? What should I especially pay attention to in order to achieve the smoothest and most durable finish possible? I would really appreciate tips regarding preparation, the right type of paint and tools, as well as any common pitfalls to avoid. Thanks in advance!
Hey Frederik32, I completely understand your concerns about painting a piece of furniture yourself. I tried it a while ago as well and was quite uncertain at first whether it would work out.
The key is thorough preparation: you really need to sand the surface well. MALM furniture is often painted or laminated, and fresh paint doesn’t adhere well without an intermediate step.
Of course, mistakes can happen, but the fun of the process and learning from it makes a big difference. Don’t be discouraged! 🙂

Hello Frederik32, to answer your question with a bit more technical detail: MALM furniture is often made of coated particleboard. For painting, it is essential to first lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper to ensure good adhesion of the paint. Then, applying a special primer is crucial. After that, you can use acrylic or acrylic-based paint.
The most important thing is careful sanding between each coat and allowing sufficient drying time. Cheap tools or lack of patience often lead to problems. A spray device is ideal, but a good quality paint roller and brush can also produce excellent results.

I wonder if it’s really necessary to paint the furniture yourself when IKEA often offers their MALM pieces at very affordable prices.
With the right tools and experience, the result can of course be excellent, but beginner-friendly? I find it more like: go ahead and tinker, but the risks are definitely there.
JAFUHAU schrieb:That’s true, but some turn an ambitious DIY project into a paint disaster – why not just keep the furniture as it is or have it professionally finished instead of spending hours sanding and painting, only to end up disappointed? Honestly, is the effort really worth it?
Of course, mistakes can happen, but it’s precisely the enjoyment and learning from the process that make a big difference.

Hello Frederik32 and everyone participating in the discussion!
I would like to summarize the topic of requirements and methods once again:
1. Preparation: The piece of furniture must be thoroughly cleaned and, above all, lightly sanded. This ensures the durability of the paint.
2. Primer: A bonding primer is essential to prevent the paint from chipping.
3. Paint selection: Acrylic paints or special furniture and spray paints are well suited.
4. Application: It’s better to apply several thin layers rather than one thick one. Sanding between coats ensures a smooth surface.
5. Tools: Brushes for small areas, high-quality rollers for larger surfaces, or spray paint (if possible).

Friedrich7 Oct 2020 17:53Hello everyone, I have also painted a MALM dresser myself, but with limited success. I didn’t allow enough time for sanding and priming, which later resulted in small bubbles and peeling.
