Hello everyone,

I’m about to buy an IKEA Hemnes shelving unit and want to assemble it by myself. My question is how long does it usually take to put together this type of furniture without any help?

I’m referring to the classic Hemnes shelf, for example, the 3-shelf model, which is quite standard in most apartments. I have basic DIY skills and am familiar with IKEA’s typical assembly process, but I want to set realistic time expectations so I can complete the project in one go.

How long did it take you, especially if you assembled it entirely on your own? Are there any tips on how to reduce the time needed effectively?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Hello Reo68,

that’s a very good and specific question. Assembling a Hemnes 3-shelf unit can indeed take different amounts of time depending on how experienced you are with furniture assembly and how familiar you are with the included instructions.

From my own experience, completing the assembly without help usually takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.

It’s important to sort all the parts beforehand and read the instructions completely. This helps avoid mistakes that cost extra time. I also recommend having a cordless drill ready, as it significantly speeds up screwing compared to using just a screwdriver.

Even when working alone, it’s worth having a large, clear workspace—ideally on the floor with a blanket or soft carpet for protection.

Feel free to ask if you have any specific difficulties or uncertainties!

Additionally, I would note that some users have difficulties with aligning the side panels or fitting in the back panel. It’s important to take enough time here, as incorrect positioning often leads to extra work.

On the other hand, if you are familiar with the basic concept, a well-planned workflow and careful work can allow you to finish in under 1.5 hours.

Personally, I would recommend allowing plenty of time for the first assembly to better gauge how long it takes and to avoid stress.

The average assembly time for an IKEA Hemnes shelf unit with three shelves is typically between 90 and 120 minutes when assembling alone, provided all parts are complete and no unexpected issues arise.

A structured workflow is recommended:
- Unpack and check for completeness
- Sort the individual parts and fasteners
- Read through the entire assembly manual beforehand
- Follow the instructions step-by-step without shortcuts to avoid mistakes

Common sources of delay include incorrect insertion of wooden dowels and inaccurate fitting of the back panel.

If you have prior DIY experience, you can expect to complete it closer to 90 minutes. Otherwise, plan for about 2 hours.

Hello Reo68,

sounds like an exciting project! The Hemnes shelf unit has a charming simplicity, but don’t underestimate the assembly.

In my experience, it really takes about 1.5 to 2 hours if you’re doing it alone and don’t get the classic “Where is part C again?!” panic halfway through.

A small tip from me: take a short break now and then and stretch a bit, it will save you frustration and cramps later.

And yes, even if no one is around to hold parts, everything can be assembled well—the IKEA designs are quite well thought out. Have fun building!

When assembling the Hemnes shelf unit with three shelves on your own, I recommend allowing between 90 and 120 minutes on average.

Also, these points are important:
- Good lighting at the workspace
- Tools such as a quality Phillips screwdriver or cordless drill
- No distractions during assembly

Additionally, if it’s your first time assembling this type of furniture alone, it can help to plan for extra time and to document individual steps with photos or notes, in case adjustments are needed later.
