KaukeoHello everyone,
I am currently planning a new kitchen using Ikea Metod kitchen units and want to design it as ergonomically as possible. In particular, I am interested in how to create a back-friendly and efficient workspace by smartly planning the cabinet heights, countertops, and storage elements. Are there any proven concepts or guidelines to follow with the Ikea Metod system to avoid prolonged standing or awkward working positions? I have read that countertop height should vary depending on body height, but I am unsure how this can be implemented with the standard Metod cabinets.
Additionally, there is the question of how to plan optimal workflows in the kitchen layout—specifically the placement of the sink, stove, countertops, and storage—so that walking distances are minimized and working posture remains comfortable.
I look forward to tips, experiences, and perhaps specific planning approaches for Ikea Metod kitchen lines to make my kitchen as ergonomically efficient as possible.

for the ergonomic planning of Ikea Metod kitchen units, the following points are essential:
- The optimal working height depends on your body height. As a rule of thumb: the countertop should be about at elbow height, plus or minus 5cm (2 inches). With Metod, you can adjust this by using different plinth heights (mostly 8-10cm [3-4 inches]) and 80cm (31.5 inches) tall tall cabinets or by using countertops that are 2-3cm (1 inch) thicker.
- Pay attention to the correct arrangement of work zones: sink, stove, and refrigerator should form a work triangle to minimize walking distances.
- Work surfaces between the main work areas (stove, sink) should be at least 60cm (24 inches) wide for comfortable working.
- Storage elements such as drawers with full extension and soft-close are not only practical but also improve ergonomics since you don’t have to bend down as much.
- For frequently used items, easily accessible drawers at waist height are recommended; less frequently used items can be placed in higher wall cabinets.
- Avoid having too many wall cabinets if possible, as they can cause congestion in the workspace.
I would recommend experimenting with the Ikea kitchen planner based on your measurements and precisely measuring the working height. There you can also try different cabinet combinations. Ideally, simulate the planning in your actual kitchen by testing temporary work surfaces at different heights.

Hello Kaukeo,
I would like to add a few basic principles that can help you design your Ikea Metod kitchen unit ergonomically:
- First, measure your exact elbow height, as this is the best starting point for the countertop height. A tape measure and standing position will help with this.
- Maintain a distance of 50 to a maximum of 60 cm (20 to 24 inches) between the work surface and the bottom edge of the wall cabinets; otherwise, it can feel cramped and uncomfortable.
- If multiple people with different heights will use the kitchen, consider varying cabinet heights, for example, lower drawers for shorter users and taller tall cabinets for appliance installation.
- The so-called "work triangle" concept in kitchen design works well with Metod, as mentioned before: ensure short distances between the fridge, sink, and stove.
- Use well-planned internal compartments in the drawers to avoid bending down and searching for items.
- Also, think about ergonomic floor mats or soft rugs for areas where you stand for long periods.
I also recommend visiting the Ikea showroom kitchens in person. This often gives you a better sense of the heights and depths of the individual modules.
If you have any questions, I’m happy to help!

Since the cabinets mostly have fixed standard heights, is there enough flexibility to really match the individual elbow joint height? In your experience, which combinations work well here?

I hadn’t thought about that at all. Is it common to plan for less than 50 cm (20 inches) clearance, or do many people go above 60 cm (24 inches)?
I want to avoid feeling cramped under the wall cabinets, especially when I’m busy at the sink.
Thanks in advance for the first valuable advice!
For the ergonomic planning of an Ikea Metod kitchen unit, I would like to present a structured suggestion:
1. Determining the optimal working height:
- Measure your elbow height while standing, preferably in a comfortable posture with your arm slightly bent.
- Subtract about 5 cm (2 inches) from this measurement to establish the working height for cutting or packaging tasks.
2. Selecting kitchen furniture:
- Ikea Metod base cabinets are standard 80 cm (31.5 inches) high, with plinths (8-10 cm / 3-4 inches) and countertops (2.8 - 3.8 cm / 1.1 - 1.5 inches) added.
- You can adjust the plinth height slightly if the countertop is fixed.
- To approach your determined working height, experiment with different combinations of plinth height plus countertop thickness.
3. Optimizing work zones:
- Position the sink centrally with at least 60 cm (24 inches) of workspace on both sides.
- The stove and refrigerator should be arranged within the “work triangle” (ideally with distances between the three main areas ranging from 120 to 270 cm (47 to 106 inches)).
4. Designing storage ergonomically:
- Use mainly full-extension drawers at hip height, as they are easier to access than deep cabinets with doors.
- Wall cabinets should not hang too low; a 50 cm (20 inch) gap above the countertop is ideal.
5. Additional tips:
- Tilted power outlets and well-placed lighting improve usability.
- Anti-slip mats or ergonomic floor mats can reduce strain during long standing periods.
Conclusion:
Adjust the plinth height and countertop so that your working height is approximately reached. Use the Ikea kitchen planner, but also test in daily use, for example with temporary work surfaces. This way, you can avoid unnecessary back pain and work more efficiently.
