charlottel30 Nov 2015 08:12I have been experiencing an issue for some time where the drawers of my IKEA Malm dressers sometimes unexpectedly stick or become difficult to open, even though there is no visible external damage. I would like to better understand why Malm drawers occasionally get stuck. Possible causes might include material distortion, temperature or humidity effects, manufacturing tolerances, or assembly errors. I am especially interested if anyone has experience with common weak points and which mechanisms exactly cause these sticking effects. Are there known problem areas or proven measures to prevent persistent difficulties? I would appreciate expert opinions or practical tips to avoid this annoyance.

why Malm drawers sometimes unexpectedly stick This is rarely questioned enough! Honestly, isn’t this a typical pitfall of modern mass-produced furniture? I would argue that the materials and construction are already pushed to their limits. It hardly surprises me when a drawer “sticks” occasionally. The standardized panels and thin particleboard react strongly to moisture. IKEA uses the cheapest wood-based materials and expects everything to fit perfectly. No, it doesn’t always fit! Assembly instructions are followed exactly, yet the drawer still sticks. I suspect the manufacturing tolerances are so tight that minimal swelling or material expansion is enough to block the mechanism. For clarification: Malm drawers are usually made from MDF or particleboard with a melamine coating. These materials have different expansion coefficients when exposed to moisture and temperature changes. When the surrounding conditions become more humid, the material swells slightly, which, combined with tight tolerances in the drawer slides, can quickly cause jamming. Installation errors, such as misalignment of the slides or over-tightening of screws, also exacerbate the problem. Additionally, the roller guides in Malm drawers sometimes tend to tilt if the drawers are overloaded or moved too quickly. Regular maintenance and precise installation are essential to maintain proper function.

Material and the construction are already at their limits That is an interesting statement, but I lack evidence for a general indication of material defects. In fact, manufacturing tolerances can also vary. The production process is often underestimated. Furthermore, it is important to distinguish between "clamping" caused by material warping and errors in assembly or use. vinli schrieb:
Materials have different expansion coefficients with humidity and temperature Exactly! Even slight fluctuations in humidity and temperature are enough to significantly affect the tactile behavior. To clean up the data: Are there values showing what percentage of humidity changes cause such blockages? Perhaps we could collect this information here as well.K
