Good morning everyone,
I am about to transport some IKEA Malm furniture and am looking for proven methods to pack these items securely to prevent scratches, dents, or other damage during the move.
I am particularly interested in the best way to protect the relatively smooth, lacquered surfaces—whether it is better to use special protective films, blankets, bubble wrap, or rugs—and how to secure the furniture pieces to prevent shifting during transport.
Perhaps someone also has experience with securing drawers and doors, or if it is advisable to remove them completely and transport them separately.
I look forward to any tips, experiences, or even step-by-step guides on how you carefully pack and transport Malm dressers or beds without damage. Thanks in advance!

If you prefer a more structured approach, here is a simple step-by-step guide for protecting your Malm furniture during transport:
1. Remove all drawers completely and wrap them separately in newspaper or packing paper.
2. Clean all surfaces with a damp cloth (dust? dirt? Not a good idea!).
3. Attach edge protectors at corners or edges (foam profiles, soft material).
4. Wrap entire furniture pieces first with bubble wrap, especially in exposed areas.
5. Then use furniture blankets or regular blankets around them for cushioning.
6. Secure the furniture firmly with straps or tie-downs to prevent shifting.
Avoid using tape directly on painted surfaces. It may leave sticky residues and damage the finish later. I hope this guide helps you transport your furniture safely.

Bubble wrap is nice, but too much effort. I have to disagree – especially when dealing with Malm furniture, simple blankets often aren’t enough because the surface is very prone to scratches. I’ve experienced this myself: a piece of furniture arrived with small but nasty scratches simply because the blanket slipped and the furniture items were touching each other directly.
Proper padding is definitely worth it. You don’t need to cover every millimeter with bubble wrap, but the corners and surfaces that are particularly exposed should be well protected.
Just out of curiosity: How many times have you transported Malm furniture? 🙂

How many times have you transported Malm? 🙂 I’ve personally done it a few times – and I swear by using a combination of bubble wrap, blankets, and securing everything properly. Moving is stressful enough; I don’t want to have to worry about scratches on top of that. 😉
A little extra tip: For doors and drawers you don’t remove, you can use Velcro straps or adjustable straps with Velcro to keep them from opening.
Good luck with your move! 🙂
