Hello everyone,

Some time ago I bought a wardrobe from Ikea, the PAX model. The sliding doors work well overall, but I miss a soft-close function on the standard hinged doors that gently slows the closing. My wardrobe currently has no built-in soft-close mechanism, and I would like to know if there are practical options to retrofit a soft-close feature on the PAX doors themselves. I am particularly interested in solutions that can be implemented with little effort and do not require extensive modification of the entire wardrobe. Are there specific additional fittings, compatible dampers, or other approaches that can be easily installed afterward? I would be very grateful for any experiences or tips. Thank you!

Basically, there are retrofit soft-close fittings available for Ikea PAX doors. However, most options come from third-party manufacturers, as Ikea does not officially offer a soft-close retrofit kit for PAX hinged doors.

It is important to ensure that the existing hinges are compatible or need to be replaced. The most common solution is clip-on hinges with an integrated soft-close feature, which are relatively easy to install. The old hinges must be removed and new soft-close hinges fitted.

Alternatively, there are external door dampers (soft-close dampers) that are attached to the inside of the cabinet frame and the door. These gently slow the door down and prevent it from slamming shut. These are generally more universal but require some DIY skills to install.

I simply replaced the hinges on my PAX with soft-close hinges. Ikea doesn’t offer their own, but compatible ones are available from other brands. Installation is similar to the original. Alternatively, you can install door dampers, which also work well.

Adding external dampers as a retrofit has the disadvantage that an additional component must be mounted on the front or inside of the cabinet, which can affect the aesthetics. Hinges, on the other hand, provide a more elegant result.

When replacing a hinge, it is important to choose the correct model that fits the mounting cup on the PAX cabinet; otherwise, installation problems may occur. A 35mm (1.38 inches) hole spacing for the cup is a typical dimension in this case.

Thank you for your responses so far!

I would like to add: My PAX has standard clip-on hinges, not the soft-close version. The doors are 40 cm (16 inches) wide and 201 cm (79 inches) tall, so they are large and heavy. I am concerned that a simple damper might not reliably close them.

Is there any experience with soft-close hinges working smoothly on larger doors like these? Or are external dampers generally unsuitable for doors of this size? How durable are such retrofit solutions over several years?

For large PAX doors, soft-close hinges with integrated damping and appropriate load capacity are definitely recommended. Most models from reputable hardware manufacturers offer suitable options for heavier door weights.

External door dampers are more of a temporary solution or suitable for smaller doors. They can wear out quickly or fail to provide reliable damping with heavy doors.

It is also important to properly adjust the hinge after installation to ensure the door closes smoothly and without strain.
