Hello everyone, I have a rather unusual problem with my Billy shelf unit from IKEA: the doors keep opening by themselves without me touching them or anyone being nearby. The doors are properly installed and actually close quite flush, yet after a short time they start to slightly lift or swing open.

I have already considered possible causes like an uneven floor, warped doors, or missing magnetic catches, but I can’t really pinpoint the reason. I’m also not sure whether the cabinet itself is “moving” or if there is some internal tension.

Has anyone experienced something similar or does anyone have an idea what might be causing this? I would appreciate any tips for troubleshooting and possible solutions. Thanks in advance!

Hello lisro57,

Your issue with the self-opening BILLY doors is usually caused by a few common factors. Here is a brief explanation of the key points and what you can check:

1. Installation and adjustment: Often, the hinges come correctly adjusted from the factory, but if they are not perfectly level, the weight of the door can cause it to open on its own.

2. Floor level: A shelf that is not standing completely level can alter the door pressure. Small gaps at the bottom also affect the closing function.

3. Magnetic or pressure latch: Many BILLY models do not include magnetic catches. Without these, slight openings are possible, especially if the doors are slightly warped.

4. Material tension: Wood can warp due to temperature or humidity changes. This often changes the closing angle.

My advice: First, check with a spirit level whether the shelf and doors are straight. Then verify if the hinges are properly tightened and if there is an adjustable screw for fine-tuning. If no magnetic catches are installed, it might be worth adding some.

In summary: The problem usually comes from a slight imbalance caused by installation, lack of a closing mechanism, or environmental factors. Good luck troubleshooting!

This is a very important point. I would add that you should also check if the shelf moves slightly when the doors open on their own. If the furniture is too loosely positioned, the weight of the doors can cause small vibrations, especially from light drafts in the room.

The type of base or floor should not be underestimated either: carpet or uneven tiled floors can cause unwanted shifting, which may cause the doors to come loose.

If the issue only occurs occasionally, changes in humidity might cause the wooden frame to warp slightly; this is not uncommon with particle board.

I always find it surprising how quickly people assume complex causes when it usually comes down to the design.

BILLY is simply a budget piece of furniture made from basic, inexpensive components. It’s actually quite normal for the doors to open on their own without additional locks. Why do people expect a quickly assembled shelf like this to close perfectly and stay shut?

Maybe it’s better to accept that these types of furniture are intended for occasional use and are not equipped with high-end drawer locks. Just keep the doors open all the time or add small stoppers, and everything will be fine.

is therefore not a sign of a defect, but simply the result of a basic design.

Simply buy and install magnetic catches; they are inexpensive and completely solve the problem.

Thanks, that sounds like a practical solution. I’m currently also leaning toward retrofitting the doors with magnets.

I’m still curious, though, about how much small installation misalignments can affect the outcome. Can this be detected, for example, by checking the hinges, or would it be better to completely realign all the doors?

The tip about using a spirit level was also helpful; I will check that first. If the doors hang slightly crooked, can that really cause them to slowly open by themselves?
