Hello everyone, I have several BILLY shelves from IKEA at home and would like to customize their color to make them more personal and better integrated into my room design. My question is: What are the best options for coloring BILLY shelves in an attractive and sustainable way without negatively affecting their stability or material? I have considered paint, films, or creative solutions like covered back panels, but I am unsure which option is the most durable, long-lasting, and visually appealing. I look forward to your tips and experiences!
I think BILLY shelves make the best canvases! đ¨
Iâve experimented with spray paint, and it works great, but be careful: masking is really important, otherwise youâll get a messy paint job. 😉
Exactly, sometimes less is more! You can also create cool geometric patterns using tape. And if something doesnât turn out right, just remove any leftover adhesive and paint over it.
Make it personal, and most of all: have fun with it! 🙂

a little color, but not too much â the BILLY has its own charm. đ

Thanks for all the great ideas!
I am leaning toward painting the edges and surfaces of the shelves but am concerned about potential wear and tear. I also find the idea of replacing or covering the back panels interesting, since I want to preserve the original structure of the shelving unit.
Thatâs a valid question. I do want something permanent but not a completely different piece of furniture. Maybe a compromise with a new back panel plus an accent color on the sides is a good idea.
Could you please share tips on how to best prepare the edges and surfaces so the paint adheres well? Are there any special primers you would recommend?

If you plan to permanently change the color of the shelf: Are you sure you want to completely alter the classic BILLY look?

For MDF and particle boards with foil coating, I recommend the following steps:
1. Clean the surface thoroughly with a degreasing cleaner (e.g., spirit or alcohol).
2. Lightly sand with 220-grit sandpaper, but be careful not to damage the surface.
3. Pay special attention to unevenness on the edges and fill lightly with filler if necessary.
4. Use a primer: I suggest an adhesion primer suitable for plastics or a special MDF primer, to ensure the topcoat adheres properly.
5. Apply paint, preferably in several thin layers.
6. Finally, seal with a matte or satin clear coat that is abrasion-resistant.
This ensures a durable finish. If you like, I can also give you recommendations for suitable brands.
