Hello everyone,

I’m currently facing a somewhat frustrating issue with a BILLY bookshelf that I assembled some time ago. I noticed that the screws I still have from back then seem to be outdated, meaning they no longer exactly match the current dimensions and specifications IKEA now provides. My question is: What can I do if the screws for my BILLY bookshelf are outdated?

Specifically, if the screws don’t fit anymore or are difficult to screw in, are there official replacement parts available, or is it better to use standard screws from the hardware store? And if so, which ones would you recommend?

Of course, I don’t want to damage anything, but I also don’t want to buy entirely new shelves. Are there any experiences or recommendations on this?

Hello Fridota,

I’m familiar with your issue, as IKEA often makes small changes to screws and fittings over time that are not always compatible with older furniture. If the screws really don’t fit, I would recommend first contacting IKEA customer service directly to request original replacement parts. They often still have matching screw sets or can suggest an alternative.

If that doesn’t work, you can also use standard screws available in hardware stores, but be sure to match the exact dimensions (thickness, length) and choose the appropriate material to maintain the shelf’s stability and prevent damage.

A good tip is to bring the old screws with you when buying screws at the hardware store to avoid purchasing the wrong ones.

Overall, it’s important to be careful when dealing with outdated screws—even if it seems like a minor issue, using the wrong screw can affect the furniture piece.

Contact IKEA customer service for replacement parts; they often still have the right screws in stock. Alternatively, you can buy screws with the same dimensions at a hardware store. Make sure to check the thread type and material.

Let’s be honest: outdated screws are often an underestimated issue with furniture like BILLY. IKEA simply changes the standards from time to time, and ideally screws today should be universal enough that this isn’t a big deal.

I think all the spare parts hassle is often an unnecessary barrier. Who says you have to use the original screws? As long as the screws have the same length and the right thread, a hardware store find works just fine – and it might even hold better.

Of course, you could argue that using original parts is the safer option, but that’s often just about convenience. In my opinion, we should all be a bit less fixated on brand-name screws and take a more practical approach.

So: screws are screws. With a little flexibility, you can assemble the shelf without the latest IKEA originals. It doesn’t always have to be expensive extras. 😉

Exactly, I feel the same way! 🙂 Sometimes people make a huge deal out of using outdated screws. I’d just stay relaxed and see what fits at the hardware store. And if you have a bit of time, using some alternative screws is no problem at all – the main thing is that the shelf is stable and looks good.

If you want, you can measure the dimensions (length, diameter, thread type) and compare the data at a hardware store. That can sometimes save you an unnecessary trip to IKEA or the hassle with customer service.

I believe a bit of DIY spirit has never hurt anyone! 🙂
