Hello everyone,

I am planning to convert my Ikea Besta shelving unit into a functional home office piece of furniture and wonder if there is already a guide or at least a well-structured set of instructions that specifically deals with converting the Ikea Besta shelving into a home office solution?

I imagine how the shelving components can be cleverly used to create work surfaces, possibly cable management, and storage for office supplies. Are there any experiences, recommendations, or even step-by-step tutorials that provide concrete guidance for such a conversion?

It would be great if someone has practical tips or ideas on how to turn the Besta into an ergonomic and functional home office unit without having to build everything from scratch. Thanks in advance!

Hey saugo,

Great idea to convert the Besta into a home office! 😍 I’ve tried it myself and can tell you: there isn’t an official Ikea guide for this, but you can find many creative DIY conversion instructions online. Most recommend:
- Mounting a worktop on top (e.g., a sturdy wooden board)
- Using Kallax or Besta units as desk supports
- Hiding cables inside ducting
- Adding extra drawer inserts for organization

The best part is that you can customize everything almost entirely to your needs! Don’t get discouraged, this kind of project is really fun and will give you a tailored home office in the end! 😉 If you want, I can share some tips on how to get started.

There is no official Ikea guide for converting Besta into a home office.

My tips:
- Place a worktop on top
- Use screws for stabilization
- Install a cable management channel
- Organize storage with drawers

Works well and quickly.

To add to the previous posts:

Converting an Ikea Besta shelving unit into a home office workstation does not require official remodeling instructions, as Ikea designed the furniture to be modular.

Key aspects:
- Installing a sturdy tabletop: Plywood panels or solid wood boards at least 2 cm (0.8 inches) thick are recommended.
- Attachment: The tabletop should be securely screwed to the Besta frame to ensure stability.
- Ergonomics: The height should be at least 72-75 cm (28-30 inches).
- Cable management: Cable channels or Velcro straps help keep cables organized.
- Storage: Using drawers and inserts from the Besta range allows for effective organization.

In conclusion: So far, no official step-by-step guide has been published. Tutorials from community forums and DIY websites are useful.

Thanks for the encouraging reply!
I’m especially interested in how you handled the cable management and ensured the stability of the worktop.

Were there any special fastening techniques or materials you would recommend?

Also, what modifications did you make regarding storage? Are the Besta units easy to combine without major changes, or did you have to make adjustments?

Hello saugo,

I built my home office using Besta and find the flexibility really great!

Regarding stability: I used a 3 cm (1¼ inches) thick plywood panel and screwed it directly onto the Besta shelf with brackets. This makes the panel very sturdy and it easily supports additional equipment like printers.

For cable management, cable ducts and cable ties are very helpful. I attached them to the back of the shelves, keeping everything out of sight but still easily accessible.

Storage is the key: Besta works perfectly for folders and small boxes, and adding a few drawer inserts creates a very ergonomic setup.

If you need help choosing screws or fasteners, feel free to ask!
