Hello everyone, a few months ago I bought an IKEA Besta shelving unit, and unfortunately I’ve noticed that the painted surface starts to wear off quite quickly and the paint peels in some areas. I’m very interested to hear about your experiences or any tips you might have to prevent the paint on Besta cabinets from coming off so fast. I’m open to advice on maintenance, proper cleaning, or perhaps additional protective measures that can be taken. It’s especially important to me to find out how I can improve the durability of the surface with minimal effort so that the furniture looks like new for longer. Thanks in advance!

I believe that a little careful maintenance works wonders! My tip: gently rub in a small amount of furniture oil once a month (but sparingly, to avoid a greasy finish), and simply touch up any visible scratches with a matching acrylic paint pen. This way, Besta furniture stays looking good longer, and you don’t have to replace it all the time.

However, caution is advised here: Melamine resin surfaces like those on Besta do not absorb oil properly and tend to become slippery due to greasy residues. Specialized sealants for plastic surfaces or a lightly wax-containing polish are more suitable.

One more point from me: When Besta furniture comes into contact with water, it not only damages the surface but can also cause swelling at the edges. Therefore:
- Always use coasters for drinks
- Dry wet items immediately
- When in doubt, apply edge sealing yourself in critical areas

This not only preserves the finish but also ensures the overall structure is protected in the long term.

The fact is: Besta surfaces are not designed for heavy mechanical stress. The melamine coating is hard but not elastic, so chips can occur quickly from impacts or scratches. The best preventive measures are:
- Do not place sharp objects directly on the surface without protection.
- Clean regularly with appropriate agents, such as pH-neutral soapy water.
- Apply an additional sealant with a clear protective film suitable for melamine (e.g., solvent-free furniture polish).

All of these precautions significantly extend the lifespan of the surface.

Interesting how everyone talks about caution and care here, but honestly: IKEA products are consumables, so you can't expect the surface to last forever. For something meant to be replaced, it's impressive if there's still some color left after two years. If you want to avoid this, maybe you should consider more expensive furniture from the start. So here’s a somewhat provocative statement from me: all the maintenance often takes more effort than it’s worth. Still, a good topic!

I share a pragmatic view on this, but with this discussion, I want to find out how to achieve the maximum possible durability with Besta. I’m not aiming for eternal lifespan, but for a significantly longer period of use than current experience suggests. If anyone has practical tips on how to minimize everyday wear and tear, I would be very interested.
