Hello everyone,

I recently ordered new doors for my Kallax shelving unit from IKEA, which were described as a perfect fit. Unfortunately, these new doors do not fit my existing Kallax unit at all. The dimensions do not match, and the mounting holes are offset, so I cannot hang or properly adjust the doors.

I have already contacted IKEA support, but the responses were unsatisfactory and rather evasive. They mostly said that the doors should be compatible and suggested I double-check the product specifications – which I did, without success.

Has anyone had similar experiences? Are there alternative solutions or tricks to install these doors anyway? Or could the compatibility issue be due to a problem IKEA has not disclosed?

Looking forward to your feedback and advice!

Have you checked whether you actually have the new doors for the current Kallax model? There are versions that only fit from 2020 onwards. Otherwise, drilling your own holes is the only option.

SIGMUND56, regarding your issue with the Kallax doors:

The fit accuracy at IKEA often only applies to purchases within the same product generation. Since 2019/2020, IKEA has made minor changes to the groove materials and the method of attachment for the door mounts on the Kallax shelves. This means that older shelves and newer doors are not compatible.

I recommend the following step-by-step approach:
1. Check the exact manufacturing year and model number of your Kallax shelf (usually on a sticker inside or on the back).
2. Compare this with the production details of the doors. You can often find information on IKEA websites or purchase receipts.
3. The repositioning of drill holes is a clear indication of different generations.

If support only gives you general answers, this may be because there is no official exchange or replacement policy, as IKEA assumes standard compatibility.

If the doors are urgently needed, the only option is a modification: carefully fill the pre-drilled holes with filler, drill new holes in the correct position, and use appropriate screws. Warning: this requires precision; otherwise, the door may stick later.

I am also interested in which material the new doors are made of. Some panels are thicker or denser, which can complicate positioning.

Do you have any other details about the shelf? Maybe better recommendations can be provided with that information.

Hello SIGMUND56,

I have experienced similar issues when repairing my old Kallax doors. Unfortunately, IKEA is not very helpful when it comes to older models. Basically, IKEA assumes that customers will always buy new shelves with matching doors.

It's important not to get discouraged. If the door dimensions are too large or too small, it’s worth making simple adjustments with basic tools. For example, using a Forstner bit allows you to make precise new holes to secure the doors to your shelf.

Also, you can often find suitable hinges or clips at large home improvement stores that are easier to install and still look good.

If you like, I can provide more details about the screws and types of hinges I used.

IKEA Support is known for often providing a "standard answer" with products like Kallax doors because manufacturing and model changes are not always clearly communicated.

Technically speaking, Kallax doors are not backward compatible after modifications to the series production. The mounting holes were shifted by a few millimeters, which in furniture of this size is enough to prevent easy installation.

My advice: First, carefully document all the measurements of your shelving unit and compare them with those of the current door models. If needed, a technical drawing can help, which you can send directly to support. Request a written statement regarding compatibility to have proof if needed.

If you have technical or DIY skills, you might consider mounting the doors with additional brackets. Without technical adjustments, installation will unfortunately not work if the model is older.

Exactly.

In my experience, rework is always necessary in such cases if you don’t want to buy a new shelf. A simple solution is to attach brackets or clips that do not rely on the pre-drilled holes.

This saves time and frustration.
