Good morning everyone, I have a Malm bed from Ikea, and several of the side slats on the frame have broken or cracked, probably due to the relatively heavy weight and frequent moving. I am now looking for a reliable method to properly repair these slats so that they are stable again and last longer.

My question: What is the best way to repair damaged slats on the Malm bed? Which tools and materials are suitable, and are there any known weak points I should be aware of?

Ideally, I would also appreciate advice on whether it’s better to completely replace the slats or repair them, and if there are any special techniques or tips to restore their load-bearing capacity. Thanks for your help!

The best way is to completely remove the damaged slats, then reinforce them using wood glue and screws. If the slat is severely cracked, it’s better to replace it with a new one. Important: don’t place the screws too close to the edge, or the wood may split further.

It’s interesting how people here often immediately recommend replacement.

But why exactly? If properly glued and secured with clamps, wood can remain stable for longer than you might expect. I consider repair using wood filler and epoxy resin to be more sensible than the reflex to replace everything.

Besides, I think the frame often has weaknesses at the fastening points or due to the material thickness. Perhaps there should be more discussion about load distribution and reinforcements instead of always talking about replacement.

MALM bed frames are usually made of particleboard with a laminated surface, which makes repairs somewhat more challenging.

1. First, remove the damaged slat.
2. For small cracks, wood glue with clamps or epoxy resin is recommended to create a durable bond. Important: clean off any dust and, if necessary, lightly sand the wood beforehand.
3. For severely broken or bent slats, replacement is advisable because particleboard tends to lose strength under load over time. Original replacement parts are easiest to obtain through Ikea or third-party suppliers.
4. Screws should be placed away from the edges to avoid splitting. Small particleboard screws with depth stops work best.

In summary: repairs are possible, but only if the material is still in good condition. Replacement parts are affordable and generally a more reliable solution.
