I am currently planning a renovation of my IKEA Hemnes wardrobe and want to prepare well for the project in advance. For me, the question is: which tools are especially useful when modifying the IKEA Hemnes and why? I have heard that you need not only a cordless drill but possibly also special tools for wooden parts and fittings. I would appreciate it if someone in the forum could share their experiences and tips on which tools have really proven useful in everyday renovation or modification work. My goal is to avoid unnecessary tools but also not to miss anything important. Who has done this before and can provide specific recommendations?

A very good and precise question that is often underestimated! When modifying the IKEA Hemnes wardrobe, I generally recommend the following tools:

- Cordless drill with a suitable bit set (especially Phillips and flathead bits)
- Screwdriver for fine work
- Hammer, ideally a small rubber mallet, to gently fit wooden parts together
- Spirit level to ensure accuracy and straightness during assembly
- Measuring tape and possibly a protractor
- Possibly a chisel if adjustments to the wood are necessary

A common mistake is trying to screw without the appropriate bits, which can damage the screws. The cordless drill should also be controllable to avoid damaging the wooden parts. Important: Take your time and insert the screws straight and not too tightly, otherwise the wood may split!

I believe that when modifying the IKEA Hemnes series, it’s worth considering options beyond the usual tools. Of course, a cordless drill is the standard choice, but why not try a router, for example, when you want to work on edges?

I completely agree with that, especially since the wood used in Hemnes elements allows very little tolerance. Still, I sometimes wonder if the cordless drill is really the best tool. You can work more precisely with a good torque screwdriver or even manual tools. But of course, for most people the cordless drill is sufficient.

Hello, I recently modified my Hemnes wardrobe myself and from experience, I can add that besides the mentioned tools, a file or sanding block is very helpful when adjusting wooden parts, for example when installing shelves or relocating hinges.

I also recommend good lighting at the workspace to better see the small screw holes. For the hinges, I often used a small pair of pliers for fine adjustments.

In my case, the cordless screwdriver was indeed a huge time saver, especially when assembling multiple components.

Hey everyone! I just wanted to quickly point out that a good adhesive shouldn’t be missing if you want to modify the Hemnes furniture in any way. Sometimes you want to secure parts that aren’t originally screwed in, and that’s when wood glue is really valuable.

And yes, I also really love the tape measure and spirit level 😊 They help avoid crooked pieces that become annoying later.

Regarding tools: a small, sharp utility knife can also be useful when fitting edge banding or removing adhesive films.

Overall, I’d say: it’s better to have a few extra items than too few, and with some fun and good coffee, the whole process gets even better 🙂

To execute the Hemnes renovation technically flawless, precise planning and the right choice of tools are essential. In addition to the devices already mentioned, I would like to address the following technical details:

- A ratcheting screwdriver can be extremely helpful in tight spots where a cordless drill doesn’t have enough space.
- When installing drawers, specialized guide rails are useful, which should also be secured with clamps to prevent slipping while assembling.
- Adjusting the back panel often requires a fine jigsaw or even a multitool oscillating saw if it needs to be shortened or repositioned.
- Regarding the fittings: Everyone should know that almost all IKEA Hemnes screws have metric threads—so you should make sure the bits fit exactly to avoid damaging the material.

Absolutely correct, poor visibility can lead to errors, especially with large furniture pieces. How big is your project exactly? Are you just modifying the cabinet or also, for example, doors or drawers?
