Good morning everyone,

I have a Pax wardrobe model from Ikea with sliding doors, where the door hinges are no longer properly aligned. The doors do not close correctly, gaps are visible in several places, and there is a slight squeaking noise when opening or closing. My specific question is: How can I readjust the Pax door hinges to restore proper function and alignment of the doors?

I have done some research and understand that Pax systems generally offer some adjustability on hinges and sliding rails. It would be important for me to know exactly which screws are suitable for readjustment, whether there are different adjustment options (e.g., horizontal, vertical, depth), and the best way to handle these to avoid damaging the materials.

I am also interested in whether the adjustment can be done with simple tools like Phillips screwdrivers, or if special tools are required. Any tips or experiences regarding potential pitfalls or tricks to make the process easier are also greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much in advance for your support!

Hello maremil,

Regarding your question about adjusting the hinges on PAX doors, I can provide the following information: PAX doors typically feature three-dimensional hinge adjustment. This allows for fine-tuning in the following directions:

- Horizontal (side to side)
- Vertical (up and down)
- Depth (in and out)

The screws on the hinges are relatively easy to access and can be adjusted with a standard Phillips screwdriver. Specifically:

1. Horizontal alignment is adjusted by a screw, usually located at the front of the hinge, which moves the door sideways when turned.
2. Vertical adjustment is done by loosening the mounting screws on the top rail or the cabinet frame and then sliding the door up or down.
3. Depth adjustment is made with another screw that sets the distance between the door and the cabinet frame.

It is important to make small adjustments and check the door after each change to avoid over-tightening or misalignment. This way, you can fine-tune the positioning precisely and reduce squeaking if needed by ensuring the door is correctly aligned.

If the doors still do not close properly, it may be worth checking the tracks or rollers at the bottom of the sliding doors as well.

With this information, you should have a good basis to adjust the door hinges yourself.

This is a good starting point; I would like to explain it a bit more thoroughly to ensure the fine-tuning really works, as there are several details to consider, especially with PAX sliding doors.

Step-by-step guide to optimal adjustment of the door hinges:

- First: Open the door and perform a visual inspection. Look for the adjustment screws, which are usually clearly visible on the hinges or fittings, often covered with plastic caps.

- Horizontal adjustment: On the side of the hinge, you will usually find a Phillips screw. By turning it slowly, you can move the door left or right. It is important to make only small adjustments at a time and to regularly close the door to check the effect.

- Vertical adjustment: To move the door slightly up or down, you usually need to loosen the upper hinge mounting (do not unscrew completely!). Then carefully raise or lower the door and tighten the screw again. This allows height adjustment of the door.

- Depth adjustment: For adjusting the distance from the cabinet, there is an adjustment screw that lets you move the door forward or backward. This setting is especially crucial when the doors slightly rub against the front edge.

In addition to the screws, it is advisable to check the tracks and, if applicable, the rollers for dirt or damage, as these significantly affect the function.

If your doors are squeaking, it might be due to a lack of lubrication on the hinges or rollers; applying some silicone spray to the moving parts can help.

How exactly are the doors attached on your PAX model? Are they classic sliding doors, or are they more like hinged doors? The construction type somewhat influences the adjustment process.

Could you please briefly describe that?

Thanks for asking. I actually have sliding doors installed on my PAX system. The doors run on tracks at the top and bottom, and the hinges themselves serve more as minimal auxiliary fittings, not comparable to traditional hinged door hinges.

My main problem is that the doors don’t close flush against each other and they scrape a bit on the bottom track. It seems like either the tracks or the rollers have shifted slightly, or the doors are not properly “hung.”

Is it still possible to adjust the hinges, or do I specifically need to focus on adjusting the tracks and rollers?

Is there a tried-and-tested procedure to systematically check and, if necessary, readjust the tracks and rollers on PAX sliding doors?

I want to understand this as precisely as possible to align the doors perfectly and restore smooth operation.
