Hello everyone,

I am planning to professionally repaint some BILLY shelves from IKEA because their color no longer fits well in my living room. Since the surfaces are already painted or melamine-coated, I am wondering about the best approach to achieve a durable and even finish.

I am especially interested in which steps I should take to prepare the surface (e.g., sanding, priming), which types of paint are most suitable (acrylic, acrylic lacquer, spray paint, polyurethane lacquer?), and what else I should consider (e.g., sanding between coats, ventilation, environmental conditions during painting).

Does anyone have experience with professionally repainting BILLY shelves or similar furniture originally coated with melamine or veneer? I want to avoid runs, bubbles, or adhesion problems as much as possible and would appreciate detailed tips and tricks.

Thank you in advance!

Hello kasujan,

I’m happy to go into detail about your project, as professional painting of BILLY shelves involves several important steps to achieve a truly high-quality result.

First, regarding the surface: BILLY shelves are usually covered with a melamine layer or a plastic foil, which itself does not provide good adhesion for paints. Therefore, thorough preparation is crucial.

1. Cleaning: Remove dust, grease, or silicone residues thoroughly using a suitable cleaning agent (e.g., alcohol or a special plastic cleaner).

2. Sanding: Light but very thorough sanding of the surface with fine sandpaper (e.g., grit 240-320) is essential. The goal is to roughen the smooth melamine foil enough to improve paint adhesion. Avoid sanding too deeply to prevent damaging the surface.

3. Priming: Use a bonding primer or synthetic resin primer specifically recommended for plastic- or melamine-coated furniture. This significantly improves adhesion.

4. Painting: PU paints or 2-component acrylic paints are ideal for the topcoat, as they are particularly durable and robust. Alternatively, a good acrylic paint is possible if you use a long-lasting furniture paint. Spray paints can be used, but they are difficult to apply evenly and tend to drip if you are not careful.

5. Between coats sanding: After the first coat, lightly sand with very fine sandpaper (grit 400 to 600) to remove dust deposits or unevenness.

6. Additional coats: At least two to three thin coats are ideal, each with sufficient drying time.

7. Environment: Paint in a dust-free environment, with moderate humidity and temperatures between 18 and 22°C (64 and 72°F).

Typical mistakes include insufficient preparation or applying layers that are too thick, which can cause bubbles or cracks.

One more question: Do you want to use a brush or roller, or would you prefer spraying? This also affects the choice of products a bit.

I hope this helps! If you need recommendations for specific products, I can provide those as well.

Hello,

important points:

1. Clean the surface thoroughly and lightly sand it.
2. Use adhesion primer suitable for plastics.
3. Apply thin coats of paint, preferably several rather than one thick coat.
4. Don’t forget to sand between coats.

Polyurethane (PU) paints are very durable. Spray paint works but is more challenging to apply evenly.

Good luck!

Exactly, that’s an important point. With spray paint, there is a higher risk of uneven layers, especially for beginners.

One small tip: when sanding, make sure to have good dust extraction to avoid contaminating the surface.

And another thing: if you plan to paint the shelves in a light color, it’s worth pre-treating them with a white or color-matched primer to prevent the dark melamine film from showing through.

How many shelves do you want to paint? That could also influence the choice of technique (brush, roller, spray gun).
