Hello everyone! Some of my Billy shelves have become quite wobbly over time. I’ve noticed that especially the connection points between the shelves and side panels are often no longer stable, and sometimes small cracks or swelling appear on the edges. My question is: What DIY tricks or simple repair methods would you recommend to make Billy shelves stable and durable again without having to buy expensive replacement parts? I would appreciate practical tips that require minimal tools and materials and are easy for beginners to apply. Thanks in advance!
Hello Pinni5, your issue with the wobbly Billy shelves is unfortunately a common one that many people experience. I’ll give you a simple guide on how to stabilize the shelf again without much cost or effort.
1. First, you should thoroughly check all screws and wall plugs. Often, the connections loosen simply because the screws have come undone. A Phillips screwdriver can already fix a lot here.
2. If the wall plugs in the side panels no longer hold firmly, it helps to slightly enlarge the old holes and replace the plugs with appropriately smaller or fresh wooden dowels. Adhesives like wood glue (preferably PVAC glue) improve bonding.
3. Small cracks along the edges can be filled with suitable wood filler and then sanded smooth. This prevents the damage from spreading further.
4. To stabilize the shelves, it can help to install additional small angle brackets inside on the sides. These are well hidden and provide support without affecting the appearance of the shelf.

Hi Pinni5, I can only recommend being careful not to apply too much force on the thin side panels when doing adjustments, as they can break easily.
For wobbly shelves, be sure to:
- Tighten the screws
- Use anchors and glue instead of just screws
- Possibly secure the shelves with small metal brackets

Hello everyone! In my opinion, 'Billy and co.' are real classics, but a little DIY refresher often brings the shelves back to life 😊.
Besides the usual tips on screwing and gluing, here’s a small tip from me: If the shelves start to sag noticeably, just place a thin board or a sturdy piece of cardboard underneath the shelf – basically as a helper that distributes the weight better.
And don’t underestimate this: Sometimes just replacing the back panel is enough. In Billy shelves, the back panel is usually made of thin particleboard that can warp over time. New back panels add a lot of stability!
That’s exactly why I thought a few small solutions using what you have at home would be great. Good luck with your repairs – and remember to stay relaxed, it’ll work out! 😉
