Hello everyone, I have a question regarding IKEA Pax doors: Is there a way to add magnetic catches to the existing closet doors to make them close more flush and quietly?
I have noticed that some cabinets or furniture pieces come with magnetic catches as standard, but this doesn’t seem to be the case with Pax doors. My main goal is to modify the doors so they gently snap shut with a light close, without having to slam them, and without visible gaps or dampers.
If anyone here has already done this: How exactly did you install the magnetic catches? Are there suitable kits available, or do you have to be creative and make your own solutions? Also, I’m curious whether adding magnets or metal parts could potentially damage the door mechanism or the door panel over time. Thanks in advance for any insights or experiences!

Hey, I think it’s great that you’re exploring a solution like this! I also spent a long time searching before I installed magnetic catches on my Pax doors – and I can tell you: it’s definitely worth it!
I simply used flexible magnetic strips attached to the side of the door and the frame. They are barely visible and work really well.
It’s important to take your time aligning them at the start, otherwise the doors won’t click properly into place.
Don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t fit perfectly right away. With a bit of patience, it will work! Good luck with your project!

Technically, retrofitting magnetic catches on PAX doors is possible, depending on the door type and the existing door material.
The following should be considered:
- The material of the PAX door (MDF or solid wood) reacts differently to drilling and glued magnets.
- The type of magnetic catch (built-in, adhesive, screw-on bracket) determines the durability and holding force.
- Excessive magnetic force can place too much strain on the door hardware and reduce its lifespan.
Recommendations:
- Precisely align the magnets,
- Use weak magnets with felt or rubber padding for cushioning,
- Whenever possible, install the magnets in areas that are not visible.
In conclusion: It is not a standard feature of PAX doors, but with careful planning, it can be implemented successfully.

Excessive magnetic force can cause an undue load on the door hardware and shorten its lifespan.I agree with this. The magnetic strength should be chosen so that the latch provides only supplemental support and does not replace the door hinges or the locking mechanism.
Additionally, I recommend the following:
- Measure the door precisely before installation and mark the points accordingly.
- Ideally, conduct a test run with temporarily fixed magnets first.
- Consider using protective adhesive tape on the hinge side to prevent damage.
This helps to avoid costly mistakes and damage to the door panel.
Conclusion: Yes, PAX doors can be equipped with magnetic latches, but it requires careful consideration and good planning.
