Good morning everyone,

I have a Malm bed frame from IKEA, where I unfortunately noticed some minor damage – mainly scratches and small dents on the surface. My question is: How can I replace only the damaged parts of the Malm bed frame without having to take the entire bed apart? Are there specific replacement parts available to order, or is it more common to replace the whole frame? I am also interested if anyone has experience with the IKEA customer service process for partial damage like this.

I look forward to helpful tips and shared experiences, especially regarding potential pitfalls or any special tools that might be needed. Thanks in advance!

Hi Veronika, good question! I have the exact same MALM bed and I can tell you: Although the frame is made up of separate parts, it’s really difficult to avoid at least some partial disassembly. It’s hard to reach the screws because the parts fit together so snugly.

Regarding spare parts: IKEA often sells the MALM bed frame only as a complete set. Ordering individual side panels separately can be tricky, but it’s definitely worth checking with customer service – sometimes they still have individual parts in stock 😊.

A little tip: If you only have minor scratches, you can easily cover them up with special wood repair markers. Saves time and effort! Good luck with the repair 🍀

Exactly that! I did the same when a friend bumped into my Malm bed. The markers are really great and not expensive.

But if the dents are deeper, I would definitely recommend replacing the damaged panels. IKEA itself has some limitations regarding spare parts, but sometimes you can find smaller sets or used parts on DIY platforms or on eBay. Just keep an eye out and stay persistent!

A little encouragement: the repair is worth it because with a bit of effort you can make the bed look like new again! 🙂

For clarification: If the goal is to replace only specific damaged parts of the MALM bed frame, I recommend the following procedure:

1. Assessment: Precisely identify the damaged parts, such as the headboard, side panels, or footboard.
2. Disassembly: Take the bed apart enough to access the connectors of the affected parts. It is advisable to carefully and systematically dismantle the entire wooden piece to avoid further damage.
3. Sourcing replacement parts: Sometimes individual parts can be reordered through IKEA customer service. If not, online marketplaces and forums are good alternatives.
4. Replacement: Carefully reassemble, paying close attention to the screws and connector elements. Avoid overtightening to prevent damage.

Make sure to have the appropriate tools ready: a Phillips screwdriver, possibly an Allen key, and preferably a work surface to protect the parts from scratches during the repair.

Important – especially due to the MALM series construction: partial repairs require patience and some DIY skills; otherwise, there is a risk of causing damage to additional parts.

Hello Veronika,

Regarding your question: IKEA offers both individual replacement parts and complete sets for the MALM series, but availability varies depending on the product and region. It’s best to contact IKEA customer service directly by phone or through their contact form and provide the model number of the MALM bed frame. Often, they can send at least the damaged side panels or individual connecting pieces.

Usually, you don’t need to fully disassemble the bed; it’s generally enough to detach the affected section. It’s advisable to carefully loosen all screws first and then gently remove the corresponding wooden parts.

I also recommend taking photos before disassembling for reference and, if possible, downloading the MALM series assembly instructions, as this helps with proper reassembly.

Good luck with your repair project!

Here is a simple step-by-step guide on how to selectively replace damaged parts of the MALM bed frame:

1. Preparation: Make sure you have a clean, spacious work area. A soft surface will protect the parts from further scratches.

2. Gather tools: You will mainly need a suitable Phillips screwdriver (usually Phillips PH2), possibly a hex key, and if available, pliers.

3. Identify parts: Examine the damage carefully and locate the connection points of the affected parts. The MALM bed frame consists of individual panels, each secured with screws.

4. Careful disassembly: Unscrew the relevant parts carefully. Important: Do not turn screws too tightly or too quickly to avoid thread damage!

5. Installing replacement parts: Fit the new parts and screw them in – a tip: first insert all screws loosely, then tighten them fully at the end to prevent tension.

6. Final check: Test the stability and check for any millimeter (inches) deviations that could affect your comfort.

Common mistakes: Over-tightening screws, which can damage threads or deform parts. If you are still unsure, feel free to ask – I’m happy to help!
