Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble several IKEA Besta cabinets soon and want to minimize the effort involved. Therefore, I am interested in which tools you have found particularly helpful and time-saving when building the Besta series. It would be helpful to learn if there are any recommended specialty tools, useful cordless drills, specific bits, or other aids that significantly simplify the assembly—especially compared to the standard tools provided by IKEA.

Do you have any experience with cordless drills that have torque control, bit sets with special bits (e.g., Torx or hex), or jigs that help with alignment and securing parts?

Basically, I’m looking for tips that make the process faster, more ergonomic, and more precise—perhaps also tricks to avoid common pitfalls during assembly. Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

Basically, the IKEA Besta assembly is well-designed with the included tools and fittings; however, certain additional tools can significantly ease the process and save time.

- A cordless drill with adjustable torque is highly recommended, as the screws often need to be tightened with low torque to avoid damaging the material.
- A set of Torx bits, especially T20, fits the supplied screws perfectly.
- A small Phillips screwdriver is useful for fine adjustments.
- A clamp (such as a furniture clamp) can help align and hold parts securely during assembly.
- A rubber mallet makes fitting wooden parts easier without damaging the surface.

These tools reduce physical effort and inaccuracies, simplifying the assembly and improving the final result.

Well, I would argue that it’s not absolutely necessary. You just need to be able to control the torque with a feel – and if you can’t, you could just as well use the included hand tools. Of course, a cordless drill makes assembly faster, but it also increases the risk of damaging something.

I actually see that as a drawback. It limits flexibility during assembly! My recommendation: Be well prepared and assemble the parts in the correct order. Then you don’t need extra clamps.

To really simplify the assembly of the IKEA Besta cabinets, I want to provide a brief step-by-step guide to the most important tools.

1. Preparation
- Tool setup: Have a cordless drill with a set of Torx T20 and Phillips bits ready.
- Set up a workspace, ideally with a clean, flat surface.

2. Alignment and Fixing
- To align the parts, a flexible furniture clamp is recommended, but it should only be used after the first screws are inserted to avoid restricting movement.
- Small tip: Use a protractor or a simple try square to check if the edges are at right angles.

3. Assembly
- Only drive screws with the cordless drill if it has a torque limiter or at least a low setting to prevent over-tightening.
- For final adjustments after the rough assembly, hand tools can be more effective, as they allow better control and sensitivity.

4. Fine Tuning
- A rubber mallet helps gently join individual parts without damaging the surface.

Finally, the most common mistake I often see: tightening screws too much. This can damage the wood and cause problems with the components later on.

I find special tools, which IKEA does not include, quite interesting, as they can still significantly improve the assembly process.

However, I also question whether every tool really provides the promised ease. For example:

- Is a clamp really necessary, or is simple hand-holding sufficient?
- Does a cordless drill with torque control make much more sense than just a handy electric screwdriver?
- Shouldn’t we rely more on experience gained through practice and care rather than constantly adding more tools?

In my view, recommendations should always be supported by evidence or practical examples. So my question to everyone is: What experiences have you had that objectively justify the use of specific tools?

I have to say, for assembling the Besta, my favorite tool is a small cordless drill with torque control – it almost feels like a magic wand 😊. Especially if you don’t overdo it, you can avoid annoying adjustments later on.

Also, a simple rubber mallet makes the assembly almost effortless. Don’t use a hard wooden hammer, or the cabinet will quickly turn into a piece of art full of dents 😂.

And honestly – anyone who plans carefully and organizes their drill bits will benefit in the long run. Chaotic screwing only leads to frustrated “Why doesn’t this fit?” moments.

So my conclusion: preparation, cordless drill, rubber mallet, and of course, a good mood!
