Hello everyone, I want to securely mount Malm furniture from Ikea on a drywall partition. Unfortunately, I’m unsure which anchors and screws are best suited for this, especially because I’m concerned that the furniture might not be stable enough or that the wall could be damaged. These are relatively heavy dressers that will also be loaded. How exactly should the fixing points be positioned? Should I use special cavity anchors or screw directly into the metal studs? I appreciate any advice based on experience with Malm furniture and drywall, not just general recommendations.

For drywall partitions, I recommend using special hollow wall anchors, such as toggle anchors, if you cannot screw directly into metal studs. Screws should be at least 5 mm (0.2 inches) thick to safely support the weight plus a safety margin. It is also advisable to check the studs with a metal detector.

Hello, I understand your concerns well. Drywall often cannot support the weight of larger furniture without appropriate fixing aids. First, you should use a stud finder to check where the metal or wooden studs are located. Ideally, you should attach the furniture directly to these studs. For Malm furniture that supports heavy items, I recommend using at least 2-3 fixing points per piece of furniture. If no studs are accessible, use toggle anchors (spring toggle anchors). These open behind the drywall and distribute the load over a large area. Screws should be compatible with the anchors, often 5x60 mm (approximately 2x2.4 inches). Also, make sure to securely mount the furniture using the provided rear panel brackets and not just by screwing into the furniture itself. Working safely is important.

Malm dressers are relatively heavy. I would definitely recommend fastening them to the metal studs. If that is not possible, then tilt toggle anchors. Do not use simple plastic anchors or hollow wall anchors.

Thanks, that confirms my initial assumption. Unfortunately, the metal studs in my case are positioned a bit inconveniently in the area where I want to fix the unit. How far apart can heavy-duty anchors be spaced while still ensuring good stability? And what should I do if the dresser is larger than the length of the studs?

Basically, installation should always be done on the studs or profiles. There are special drywall screws (e.g., self-drilling screws) that reliably hold the profiles. For larger pieces of furniture, it is recommended to use at least two, preferably three screw points in the profiles. The spacing between profiles is usually 60cm (24 inches); here, an additional batten can be added to create more fixing points. For areas without profiles, using toggle anchors is advisable, but their load capacity is limited. A combination of profile fastening and cavity anchors increases stability. Avoid all types of simple drywall anchors for heavy loads.
