Hello everyone,

I have a problem with squeaky hinges on my IKEA Billy bookcases. These are the standard metal hinges that, over time and with use, start making quite loud and unpleasant noises. My specific question is: What is the best way to repair or maintain these Billy hinges to stop them from squeaking? I would prefer not to buy new parts but rather use lubrication or something similar.

Are there any special products recommended for lubricating hinges, such as oil-based or dry lubricants? Also, do I need to remove the hinge completely, or is it sufficient to maintain them while they are still installed? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Simply spray WD-40 onto the hinge, move it a few times, and you're done. Removing it is not necessary.

Hello,

I understand that squeaky hinges can be annoying. For Billy shelves, I recommend first cleaning the hinge with a mild cleaning cloth to remove any dust. After that, a silicone or Teflon spray works well because these lubricants provide long-lasting effects and do not attract dirt.

WD-40 offers short-term relief, but it evaporates quickly and the noise may return afterward. It is more of a rust remover than a lubricant.

When lubricating, open the hinge fully while it is still installed, then spray the lubricant into the joints and swing the door back and forth several times. Removing the hinge should only be done if it is damaged.

Hey, I had exactly the same problem last year. My secret tip: silicone spray! 🙂 No mess, doesn’t attract dirt, and the squeaking is gone.

Just spray WD-40 on the hinge

WD-40 feels good at first, but I soon had the same issues again. Silicone lasted much longer for me.

If the hinge is very stiff, a drop of sewing machine oil can help. It attracts less dirt than WD-40 and penetrates well. Simply apply and move the hinge.

Brief and to the point: Billy hinges are simple folding mechanisms with metal pins and springs. It is important to clean off any dirt first, as lubricant will not work properly otherwise. For the hinges themselves, I recommend maintenance oil or a lubricant specifically designed for hinges, preferably a dry type (such as Teflon or graphite) if you want to avoid dust build-up.

Removing the hinges is usually unnecessary as long as you have clear access. Be careful with WD-40: it is mainly a penetrating oil and not a long-lasting lubricant.
