Hello everyone, I’m currently trying to retrofit soft-close functionality to my IKEA Platsa cabinet doors. So far, the doors are fitted with the standard hinges, which unfortunately close quite loudly and forcefully. Does anyone have experience or ideas on how to integrate a soft-close mechanism into PLATSA doors? Which components are suitable, how complex is the installation, and do the standard dampers from other IKEA products fit? Any help is very welcome, including tips on tools or fastening methods. Thanks in advance.

You just need to remove the old hinge mechanism and install the soft-close hinge with screws. Please note that the drilling holes in the door and the cabinet frame must match.
Oh, great topic! I recently added soft-close mechanisms to my PLATSA doors as well, and it feels really high-quality! 😃 The important thing is to find the right hinges and install them carefully; then it works smoothly. If it sticks, don’t give up – adjusting them regularly does the trick! Good luck, it’s definitely worth it!

For PLATSA doors, you can purchase soft-close hinges directly from IKEA, for example, those with integrated damping from the METOD system. Interesting, but isn’t it possible to install just the dampers separately, without replacing the entire hinges? I doubt the drilling patterns between PLATSA and METOD are fully compatible. Maybe you have to retrofit individually, for example with additional dampers on the hinge area or magnetic dampers in the door frame.
I can provide a more detailed description of how to make PLATSA doors soft-close. First: the original hinges for PLATSA do not have damping. The soft-close hinges from IKEA (for example, from METOD) use a different mounting system, so it is rarely possible to simply swap them without adjustments.
What you can do:
- Obtain suitable soft-close hinges that are mechanically compatible (often METOD hinges).
- Check the drill holes. Sometimes new holes need to be drilled, so be sure to measure carefully.
- Alternatively, there are soft-close clip-on dampers that can be mounted on existing hinges if the construction height and space allow.
- Installing the dampers is often easier, but they have limitations regarding holding strength.
I recommend carefully checking which option fits your specific PLATSA model. Sometimes metal adapter plates are required to secure the new hinges. Tools: cordless drill with a fine drill bit, screwdriver, possibly wood glue and dowels for corrections. It’s best to measure the distance between the hinge holes and select appropriate hinges from IKEA or third-party suppliers with compatible dimensions.

I doubt that the drilling templates for PLATSA and METOD are fully compatible. I agree. When measuring, I also noticed that the hinge holes don’t line up exactly. I don’t want to have to drill completely new holes, as this could damage the doors.
