Hello everyone, I recently bought some IKEA Billy bookshelves that have a foil finish, meaning they are covered with a protective film on the visible surfaces. Since I want to keep these shelves in good condition for as long as possible, I’m interested in which care methods or cleaning products you would recommend that won’t damage the foil or dull the surface. It’s especially important for me to find a gentle cleaning method that effectively removes dust and perhaps also light stains. Maybe you also have tips on which products to avoid because they can harm the foil layer. Who has experience with foil-finished BILLY shelves or similar furniture with a foil coating? I look forward to your recommendations and any advice on how often such care should be done.

To be honest: anyone who believes laminates last forever is mistaken. These laminates are not high-gloss paint; they age and change over time. My advice: clean gently more often rather than using harsh products at some point. Microfiber cloths with a little warm water are recommended. Avoid alcohol- or solvent-based cleaners, as they are really harmful to laminate. Even if it sounds simple, just be gentle, because often you cause more damage by trying too hard.

Microfiber cloth, lukewarm water, mild soap for tougher stains. Do not use abrasive cleaners, alcohol, or aggressive detergents.

It is very important to know the exact properties of the foil, as there are both matte and glossy versions of BILLY, and their care requirements can vary slightly. For furniture with foil surfaces, I generally recommend a multi-step approach: First, carefully remove dry dust with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Then, if needed, clean with a mild dish soap diluted in water that is not too hot (maximum hand warm). The sponge or cloth should not be abrasive, as micro-scratches can form and permanently damage the foil. Afterwards, be sure to immediately wipe dry to avoid water spots.

Products containing solvents, alcohol, or strong chemicals should be strictly avoided, as they can attack the plastic component of the foil and make it porous. Sensitive matte foils also tend to develop shiny spots from polishing with common furniture care products, which looks unpleasant. In my experience, regular maintenance every 2-3 months is reasonable, or more often with heavier use.

Here is a brief care tutorial for laminated BILLY shelves:

1. Dust removal: Use a dry, soft microfiber cloth. Dust tends to settle in the textures of the laminate.

2. Gentle wet cleaning: If needed, slightly dampen the cloth with a few drops of mild, alcohol-free dishwashing detergent solution.

3. Do not wring out the cloth! Avoid soaking the laminate and do not allow standing moisture.

4. Stains: For stubborn dirt, try using a slightly damp window leather or a soft cotton cloth with warm water.

5. Do not use: Abrasive cleaners, alcohol-based cleaners, solvents, waxes, or polishes.

6. Drying: Immediately wipe with a dry cloth, as water can leave unsightly marks.

Summary: Care requires patience, very gentle handling, and mild cleaning agents to enjoy the laminate for a long time.

I also initially worried about whether the laminate on my BILLY shelves would be delicate. At that time, I was told that it is especially important not to apply too much pressure to the surface or use sharp objects to avoid scratches.

I completely agree with that. Ultimately, I find the laminates quite durable, as long as you respect their limitations. Following these guidelines makes cleaning less stressful and more comfortable for me in everyday life – a big plus in my experience.
