sibettino29 Dec 2020 14:33Hello everyone,
I have a question that’s been on my mind lately: Are there replacement covers for the open compartments of KALLAX shelves?
I own a KALLAX unit with several open compartments that I want to use differently on a temporary basis. However, I’m missing the option to close these compartments with suitable covers to create a more uniform appearance or to keep out dust.
I know IKEA itself doesn’t offer direct covers as accessories, but maybe there are third-party options, DIY solutions, or recommendations for fitting, sturdy covers?
I would really appreciate any experiences, tips, or suggestions, especially if anyone has looked for or implemented similar solutions before.

Hello sibettino,
Your question is really important. I often struggle with this "problem" myself when I want to use compartments differently or temporarily hide something.
Unfortunately, I’m not aware of any original replacement covers from IKEA – KALLAX is designed more modularly with shelves and inserts rather than with covers.
But there are some creative solutions I’ve tried: for example, thin plywood panels that I had cut to size at the hardware store and covered with black foil. It looked almost like the original KALLAX style and was sturdy enough to serve as a cover.
Maybe this could work for you too? I understand that this is quite important, especially if you want to create order or prefer a uniform look :-)
What is your intended use for the compartments – is it more about appearance or functionality (dust protection, stability)?

Hello everyone!
I find the idea of replacement lids really interesting. 😄 I had a similar situation because my dog likes to sniff around open compartments and pull things out – so having closed lids was really useful.
I noticed that some people use small height adjusters for shelves and then place matching MDF boards on top. You can easily cover the MDF boards with self-adhesive film to match the KALLAX.
It might sound a bit unusual at first, but it works surprisingly well and doesn’t cost much. Oh, and don’t forget: it should be easy to remove in case you need to access the compartment.
Best regards! 😊

Hello sibettino,
I’d like to provide a bit more input on your question:
I can confirm that IKEA does not offer official replacement covers for the open compartments of the KALLAX system. This is likely because the modular design of the shelving allows for other options, such as insert shelves, drawers, or baskets.
Many users therefore opt for DIY solutions. Common materials for this are:
- Plywood or MDF boards
- Plastic sheets (such as acrylic)
- Suitable construction wood panels from hardware stores
It is important to take accurate measurements—the KALLAX compartments are approximately 33×33 cm (13×13 inches) in size. For example, if you go to a hardware store and have panels cut to size, you can smooth the edges with sandpaper and then customize the color with paint, varnish, or adhesive foil to match the furniture.
If you prefer a temporary solution, you can also use panels that simply rest loosely on top. For permanent solutions, screws or clips can be used, but this requires some DIY skills.
If you have any further questions, for example about dimensions or the best materials, I’m happy to help.
