Hello everyone,
I have a question about storage in a 4x4 KALLAX unit from IKEA. I’m planning to store my trading cards or small insert boxes in it, and I’m specifically wondering: How many individual inserts can fit at most in a 4x4 KALLAX shelf?
I’m referring to the small inserts that you can buy separately to divide the large compartments into smaller sections—often made of plastic or wood, about 15cm x 15cm (6 inches x 6 inches) per insert. There are theoretically different sizes, but I’m particularly interested in the maximum possible number if you fill the compartments completely to the edge, minimizing wasted space.
Maybe someone here is familiar with the dimensions and possible subdivisions? I look forward to your input!

Hey Ronme!
It’s great that you want to use the KALLAX so effectively! 🙂
I have the 4x4 KALLAX myself and can tell you: each of the 16 large compartments works really well with inserts. If you use the smaller insert boxes, which are about 15cm x 15cm (6 inches x 6 inches), you can usually fit 4 of them per compartment, arranged 2 by 2. That means a total of 64 inserts for all 16 compartments!
Depending on the exact size of the inserts, it might fit better or a bit less perfectly, but with a bit of careful adjustment, it works easily!

NoValentin20 Jun 2022 08:31The dimensions of a KALLAX compartment are approximately 33x33 cm (13x13 inches). Inserts measuring 15x15 cm (6x6 inches) fit two side by side with a small gap. Therefore, each compartment can hold 2x2 = 4 inserts.
With 4x4 compartments, that amounts to a total of 16x4 = 64 inserts.

Hello Ronme, I’d like to answer your question in more detail. The IKEA 4x4 KALLAX shelving unit consists of 16 square compartments, each with internal dimensions of about 33x33 cm (13x13 inches). If you insert inserts measuring approximately 15x15 cm (6x6 inches), you can fit two inserts side by side and two stacked vertically in each compartment.
That results in 4 inserts per compartment, multiplied by 16 compartments, so a total of 64 inserts. However, keep in mind that due to slight tolerances in the shelving unit or the inserts (e.g., thickness of the material walls), you might fit slightly fewer.
If you have smaller inserts or custom-made solutions, the number may vary accordingly. Also, you should consider the height: the KALLAX compartment is about 33 cm (13 inches) high, so there is enough room for inserts of a suitable height.
I hope this helps you!
