Hello everyone,

I am currently considering upgrading or replacing the door systems on my IKEA KALLAX shelves. Specifically, I am wondering if magnetic replacement handles are available for the KALLAX doors.

By magnetic handles, I mean ones that can simply attach to the door panel without screws or complicated installation, allowing easy use thanks to their magnetic attachment.

I find this especially practical for quickly opening and closing the doors without needing to buy spare parts or drill holes.

Does anyone know of such magnetic replacement handles compatible with KALLAX doors? Or are there alternative solutions or innovations to replace the original door handles without damaging the shelf or the doors?

Currently, I am not aware of any official magnetic replacement handles for the KALLAX door system from IKEA. The original handles are usually screwed on or permanently attached to the door.

The idea of magnetic handles is generally interesting, but it should be noted that KALLAX doors are mostly made of wood-based panels. Magnets do not adhere to wood, so the handles would need to be mounted with a magnetic holder on a metal plate.

One possible solution would be to attach a thin metal plate to the inside of the door and have the magnetic handle hold onto it with a strong neodymium magnet. However, care should be taken to ensure that the door’s function and appearance are not compromised, and that stability is maintained.

In summary: There are no standard magnetic replacement handles for KALLAX, but with some DIY skills and suitable materials, a magnetic solution can be achieved.

I can only agree with that.

So far, IKEA uses mechanical fasteners for KALLAX handles.

If you’re looking for magnetic handles, you usually have to rely on DIY methods, as the previous speaker described. If there is a metal mounting on the inside, magnetic handles work well, provided the magnets are strong enough.

Otherwise, small self-adhesive metal plates are recommended to hold the magnets.

A good balance is essential to ensure the handle does not slip or come off with frequent use.

I am not aware of any direct magnetic replacement handles for KALLAX.

A simple suggestion: use neodymium magnets plus a metal plate on the inside of the door.

This way, you can attach almost any type of handle magnetically.

I can contribute something on this topic, as I recently had similar considerations.

Magnetic handles for furniture work best when the magnetic mount attaches to metal. Since KALLAX doors are mostly made of wood, the surface material needs to be taken into account.

If you don’t want to make holes or use screws, you can attach small metal plates to the door using strong double-sided tape. The magnetic handle will then stick to these plates.

Make sure the tape is of good quality, as the handles will be subjected to pulling forces during use.

The strength of the magnet should also be carefully chosen—too weak and the handle will fall off, too strong and operation becomes difficult.

I have had good experiences with this method and recommend it as a practical alternative to conventional handles.

This is not entirely accurate in a general sense. Magnets indeed hardly stick to wood, but it depends on the structural design.

If the door has a metal reinforcement or stiffening inside, a magnetic handle could actually hold there.

For a stable, long-lasting solution, I would still recommend mechanical fastening, as magnets can quickly slip under stress, which can result in the danger of handles breaking off.

The usefulness of magnetic handles should therefore be critically questioned, despite the obvious advantages during installation.
