Good morning everyone, I am planning to get an Ikea Platsa shelving unit for the children's room, but I have concerns about how to make this furniture as safe and child-friendly as possible. My main questions are: How can I securely anchor the shelves to prevent tipping, especially if small children climb on them? What protective measures can be applied to the edges and corners of the PLATSA system to reduce the risk of injury? Are there any experiences with child-friendly interior layouts or inserts that make access easier while minimizing potential hazards? I look forward to suggestions that ensure both practical safety and child-appropriate use.

Hey Gabrielk30, it’s great that you’re thinking about this so carefully! The PLATSA shelf is excellent and very flexible, but yes – safety is especially important when children are around. What I recommend is to securely anchor the shelf to the wall using wall anchors that Ikea provides. These small metal brackets already prevent a lot of accident risks! For the corners, I used copper foam corner protectors myself – really good for small children and easy to install! 😊

Regarding the interior layout: I find small baskets or boxes on the lower shelves ideal, so the kids can take things out without emptying the whole cabinet. Very practical! Good luck, you’ve got this!

Make sure to secure the shelf with wall anchors

This is an essential point. For securing Ikea PLATSA shelves in a child's room, I recommend the following approach:

- Always use the supplied wall fixing brackets or high-quality metal angles, firmly screwed in.
- Make sure to choose screws and fixing materials suitable for the specific wall type (e.g., anchors for drywall or concrete).
- To prevent injuries from sharp corners, silicone or foam corner protectors can be attached to the edges.
- For organization, sturdy plastic boxes or fabric baskets are useful, as they can be easily removed by children and have no sharp edges.
- Additionally, arranging shelves lower creates easy-to-reach areas and helps avoid climbing.

This reduces the risk of tipping and protects against injuries from corners.

Hello Gabrielk30, I completely understand how important safety is to you! In our household with two small children, I had similar concerns. Sometimes you almost feel powerless when the little ones want to climb everywhere.

I agree with that! I would add this: use the lower compartments for toys and leave the upper shelves for items like books or decorations. This way, you reduce attention to high climbing opportunities.

Additionally, I’ve had good experiences with non-slip mats under the shelf unit, especially if the floor is smooth. That adds extra stability. Also, make sure you have secured the wall fixing properly and firmly – I didn’t take that seriously enough at first because I thought the shelf would be stable on its own.

I hope this helps you – safety is always an ongoing process that improves over time.

I would like to add something because safety and functionality are extremely important when it comes to furniture for children. Based on my experience, the following has proven effective:

- Use additional door and drawer locks if you want to secure compartments, as children can easily pinch their fingers.
- Rounded edges on shelves are great, preferably with soft foam padding that can be replaced if needed.
- Keep the shelf as close to the wall as possible – larger gaps often encourage children to climb.

I also found it helpful to discuss with children which areas they are allowed to use. Communication sometimes makes more of a difference than you might expect.

A thoughtfully arranged shelf can also encourage enjoyment in tidying up and keeping things organized, which in turn increases safety.

Important: Always use wall anchors and avoid storing heavy items on top. Install corner protectors; they are inexpensive and helpful. Do not place glass or fragile items on shelf compartments. Keep children's boxes at the bottom to prevent climbing.
