anatolia3325 Mar 2023 09:37Hello everyone, I am planning to upgrade my Ikea Besta shelving unit with a custom-made front and am wondering about the best way to approach this.
My goal is to create a precisely fitting, high-quality front that not only matches the room aesthetically but is also functional and durable. I’m especially interested in material selection, accurate cutting, and tips for mounting the hinges so that the front closes cleanly and sits securely.
I have some DIY experience, but with Ikea systems the dimensions are often quite specific, and the standard fronts are limited in design. How do you take measurements, which tools do you recommend for cutting, and what should I keep in mind when installing, for example, soft-close hinges?
Also, have you worked with alternative materials like MDF, plywood, or even aluminum, and can you offer any recommendations?
Looking forward to your detailed tips and tricks on the topic of “Ikea Besta DIY – how to build a custom front?” Best regards!

Hello anatolia33,
Your great and very practical question! When making custom fronts for Ikea Besta, it is important to measure as precisely as possible—this is the foundation for a successful result.
I recommend always using a caliper or at least a good metal tape measure to accurately record the carcass depth, width, and any recesses for hinges. Allow a tolerance of 1-2 millimeters (0.04-0.08 inches) on each side so the doors do not bind.
In terms of materials, MDF is very popular because it is stable, affordable, and easy to work with. Plywood (multi-layered veneer boards) is slightly more durable and suitable for doors that will experience heavier use. Working with aluminum requires more specialized equipment, usually a workshop with appropriate milling and drilling machines.
For cutting, I recommend a table saw or a miter saw with a fine-toothed blade to avoid splintering. Also, sanding the edges with fine-grit sandpaper is essential so that paint or laminates adhere well later.
Regarding hinges: Ikea Besta often uses 35mm (1.38 inches) cup hinges. If you want soft-close, you can upgrade to those; they are usually a bit more challenging to install because they need precise fitting. Especially when drilling the cup holes, make sure to use depth and height stops on the drill to avoid drilling all the way through.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask!

I recommend always working with a caliper or at least a good metal tape measure to accurately capture the carcass depth, width, and any recesses for hinges.I fully agree with this and would like to explain the process in more detail:
- Step 1: Measure the internal dimensions of the Besta carcass (width x height x depth)
- Step 2: Determine whether the door should be flush-mounted or overlayed (for overhangs or a flush appearance)
- Step 3: Choose the material: MDF is easy to paint, while plywood handles moisture better and is more durable
- Step 4: Cutting: For self-made fronts, I recommend protecting the cut edges with edge banding or acrylic filler to prevent moisture penetration
- Step 5: Hinge installation: Standard cup hinges require a 35-mm (1.38 inch) drill hole, which you can make using a Forstner bit
- Step 6: Order of operations: First, mark the drill holes on the carcass, then on the front, to ensure a perfect fit
A common mistake is trimming the door flush with the carcass without leaving clearance for the hinges. This often causes problems when closing.
One additional tip: For painted fronts, use high-quality primer and multiple coats of paint to improve durability and appearance.
Good luck with your build!

How do you go about measuring, which tools do you recommend for cutting, and what should I keep in mind when installing soft-close hinges, for example?I love projects like this because they leave so much room for creativity and personal touches. At the beginning, I was often uncertain about the exact measurements, so I got into the habit of measuring twice and carefully noting down my sketches.
Soft-close hinges add a lot of convenience, but yes, their installation requires patience. I made my fronts from MDF and chose a water-based paint for them – it has low odor and is easy to work with.
If you feel stressed about the precision, keep in mind that a good cut and protecting the edges are more important than rushing. It helps to prepare your tools well, such as drills, cordless drivers, and saws.
Also: be patient when adjusting the hinges; small tweaks with a screwdriver save a lot of frustration later on. And if it’s not perfect the first time, that’s normal – by now, I often make two prototypes myself.
Don’t get discouraged, doing it yourself is really fun!
