Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to upgrade my Ikea Pax wardrobe, focusing especially on organizing the drawers effectively. Since I want to store some heavy items like books, tools, and electronics, I’m wondering: which Ikea Pax drawers are actually suitable for heavy loads?

I am interested in the maximum load capacity, sturdy runners, and overall durability when used regularly under weight. There are various drawer depths and widths, sometimes with metal inserts or other materials that can be combined.

I would really appreciate detailed experiences, tips on the models, and especially information about the maximum weight capacity. Who has stored heavy items in Pax drawers and can recommend specific models or advise against some?

Thank you in advance!

The metal front drawers with full extension usually carry the most weight. Standard wooden boxes support less load capacity. It’s best to check the product specifications at Ikea.

Regarding the load capacity of the Pax drawers:

- Drawers with metal or steel constructions are designed to support loads of up to 25 kg (55 lbs) per drawer.
- Wooden drawers with full extension slides can hold approximately 15 kg (33 lbs).
- Stability tends to decrease with wider drawers, so the maximum load capacity may be lower in those cases.

I recommend choosing metal runners and drawers specifically designed for heavy loads when dealing with heavier items. Additionally, attention should be paid not only to the material but also to the drawer slides. IKEA usually provides detailed information on load capacities in the product specifications.

Hey, I have some incredibly heavy technical books in the metal drawers of the Pax wardrobe, and they hold up really well—no squeaking or sticking at all. 😉

The standard wooden boxes with plastic runners bent after a short time for me, so I wouldn’t recommend putting heavy loads in those.

So: metal shelves and drawers are the sturdy choice when you need to handle heavy weights!

I understand that load capacity is an important issue for you when it comes to Pax drawers. I once filled a drawer with tools, which unfortunately became increasingly difficult to open over time – this really concerned me.

I have now switched to drawers with metal sides and thick-reinforced full-extension slides. While it’s not just a matter of cost, I consider the stability to be significantly better.

It might also be worth trying to distribute the load as evenly as possible, as this can help prevent damage.

That is interesting and confirms something I had suspected. Does anyone know if the load limits at Ikea are officially documented anywhere? Or are these mostly user experiences?

A tip for the care and maintenance of the drawers would also be helpful – how can the sliding mechanism remain smooth and quiet, even under heavy load?
