Hello everyone, I am currently planning to convert an IKEA Besta unit into a bench with additional storage for the children's room. My idea is to use the Besta so that there is a padded seat on top and enough storage space underneath for toys and books. I am uncertain about the best way to reinforce the carcass and fronts, whether an additional sturdy cover is necessary, and how to make the whole construction child-friendly and safe. Does anyone have practical experience or tips on what to consider when assembling and choosing materials? Recommendations for padding or suitable seat cushions would also be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hello Reoja, I’m happy to help you here! To convert your IKEA Besta into a storage bench, here is a structured approach:

- Check the frame: The Besta units are generally sturdy enough, but for the seating surface, I recommend adding an extra layer, for example, an 18 mm (3/4 inch) plywood sheet that fits precisely on the frame.

- Padding: It’s best to use foam with a thickness of 4–5 cm (1.5–2 inches), along with a fabric cover with Velcro fasteners so you can remove and wash the cover easily.

- Fronts/doors: Make sure to install child-safe handles or push-to-open mechanisms to ensure easy and safe opening.

- Attachment: The seating surface should be fixed to the frame from the inside using brackets to prevent it from slipping.

Common mistakes include using a layer that is too thin without reinforcement or unsuitable padding that wears out quickly. If you want, I can also give you tips on cutting and tools.

I can only confirm that. Additionally, I would recommend choosing the seat height carefully – ideally between 42 and 45 cm (16.5 and 17.7 inches) so that children can sit comfortably. For the upholstery, you should use breathable materials and make sure the covers are removable. It is also advisable to fit the storage flaps or doors with soft-close hinges to prevent small fingers from getting pinched.

Thanks for the initial tips! Using plywood sounds like a good idea to make the seating surface stable. However, I’m still wondering whether it’s better to connect the Besta units side by side as multiple modules or to use one large cabinet with several compartments. Which option provides more stability, and how about accessibility to the individual storage compartments? Also, how would you recommend attaching the seat cushion— is Velcro really reliable on wooden panels, or should other methods be considered?

A great question, Reoja.

Here are some considerations:

- Multiple modules side by side: This has the advantage that each element remains portable and the layout can be adjusted later. However, the overall frame is less rigid and requires connecting components like screws or special brackets to ensure stability.

- One large carcass: Generally provides more stability, especially if you securely join the interior walls. However, the weight will be higher, which can be a disadvantage when rearranging.

For fastening the seat cushion, I recommend a combination of hook-and-loop tape and additional metal brackets or screws that you attach discreetly underneath. Hook-and-loop tape alone can become loose if children slide or jump on it frequently.

If you want, I can also send you a step-by-step guide for connecting the modules.

Secure modular elements side by side using connecting fasteners. Fix seat cushions with Velcro and screws. This keeps everything stable and prevents the cushions from slipping.
