Hello everyone, I recently purchased several Ikea Hemnes pieces of furniture that I plan to place in a room with moderate humidity. I understand that wood—especially the pine wood commonly used in Hemnes furniture—is very sensitive to moisture and fluctuations in indoor climate. Therefore, my question is: what effective methods are available to specifically protect Ikea Hemnes furniture from moisture and prevent long-term damage such as swelling, warping, or mold growth? I am looking for practical protection measures, ideally ones that can be implemented with reasonable effort and without altering the original appearance of the furniture. I would appreciate any advice regarding suitable protective coatings, handling in the room where the furniture is placed, underlay materials, or other measures.
Hello Falk10! Wow, that’s a really great question, especially since Hemnes is so popular! 🙂 I have Hemnes furniture myself and can only say: It’s always a good idea to treat the furniture with a transparent oil-based wood preservative. This protects very well against moisture and preserves the natural look. Also, make sure the furniture isn’t placed directly against cold exterior walls where moisture can condense. And yes – dehumidifiers also help a lot! Keep at it to ensure your furniture stays beautiful for a long time!
Interesting, @NUPIN! However, in my opinion, the effectiveness of oil-based wood preservatives against moisture is not always guaranteed, especially indoors where humidity levels fluctuate. It is important to differentiate between protection against seasonal swelling and shrinking of the wood and protection against mold. Wouldn’t a breathable wood treatment actually be better to prevent moisture buildup within the wood? Sometimes, sealing the wood too tightly causes more harm than good. Does anyone have experience with breathable wood stains on Ikea Hemnes furniture?
Thank you for the information! To summarize: oil-based wood preservatives are an option, but they might create a barrier that’s too dense; breathable stains are often recommended to prevent moisture buildup. Are there any specific product recommendations or even long-term experience regarding how these treatments affect Hemnes pine wood? Also, what about the impact of indoor humidity? Is it sufficient to properly treat the furniture, or should indoor air be actively measured and controlled, for example with dehumidifiers or heating practices?
