Hello everyone, I’m considering using an IKEA Kallax shelf unit as a TV stand, but I don’t want to just place it loosely against the wall. My idea is to securely fix the shelf to the back wall of my living room to ensure more stability and prevent it from tipping over. My question is: how stable is a Kallax when attached to the wall? Is fastening it to the wall enough to safely and securely hold heavier items like a television and some decorations without the risk of tipping? Or would it be better to consider additional reinforcements or a different construction? Looking forward to your experiences and advice!

A Kallax unit becomes significantly more stable when attached to the wall. It is best to screw it into the wall using appropriate anchors and angle brackets. Be sure to check the maximum load capacity if you plan to place a television on it.

I would recommend always securing the Kallax to the wall at least at two points. This way, you prevent it from tipping over. The load capacity, however, naturally depends on the wall material and the screws used.

An important note regarding the stability of a Kallax shelf when mounted to the wall: The shelf itself is not designed as a heavy-duty piece of furniture. Therefore, its load-bearing capacity for a television depends heavily on how it is fixed to the wall.

Wall mounting on the back panel is sufficient if:

- You use at least two sturdy mounting points (metal brackets).
- The wall anchors are properly sized for the type of wall (e.g., concrete, brick).
- The Kallax shelf is not subjected to strong lateral forces or leverage.

Additionally, the load on the shelf section holding the television should not exceed the manufacturer’s specified weight limit. For extra stability, it is possible to attach a reinforcing board and also secure it to the wall.

This is an important point for me. I have a TV weighing about 18 kg (40 lbs) that will be placed on top. Do you think this is already critical, or is it still within a safe range?

Would one fastening point at the top left and one at the top right be sufficient, or should additional brackets be installed?

Good morning!

Regarding stability and wall mounting for Kallax, I can recommend the following:

1. Attachment points: Two brackets at the top left and right are sufficient to prevent tipping if installed correctly. For extra support (e.g., when storing heavy items), adding two more brackets in the middle is advisable.

2. Anchor choice: Pay attention to the wall type. For concrete or brick walls, expansion anchors work well; for drywall (plasterboard), use special hollow wall anchors.

3. Load distribution: The TV should be positioned as centrally as possible, directly above a shelf divider. This distributes the weight better and prevents deformation.

4. Reinforcement: If you want to be extra safe, you can install additional cross braces or a wooden panel inside the back panel and screw them in.

5. Safety strap: Additionally, use a safety strap (anti-tip strap) in households with children or pets.

In summary: Two brackets are the minimum; more brackets significantly increase stability. With proper installation, the shelving unit remains stable enough to support a TV weighing around 18 kg (40 lbs).
