Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of securely fastening the doors of my IKEA Billy bookcase. Although I use the supplied hinges and screws, I occasionally have the problem that the doors or at least the hinges become a bit loose or don't sit completely stable after some time.

My specific question is: What methods or additional aids would you recommend to attach BILLY doors permanently securely and stably, especially if the bookcase is heavily used or placed in a somewhat humid room? Are there special screws, additional wall plugs, or reinforcements that significantly improve the hold?

I am also interested in any experiences with alternative mounting methods that could considerably increase the durability of the door attachment. Thank you in advance for your tips!

I would recommend regularly retightening the screws after installation, especially with heavier use. As an addition, you can attach a small piece of felt tape or sealing tape to the door frame to distribute the pressure more evenly. Alternatively, reinforced corner brackets behind the shelf can provide additional support.

I completely understand your concern. When you invest a lot of time and energy into furniture, it’s frustrating if the doors don’t stay properly in place. Personally, I also had problems with the BILLY doors, especially in a kitchen where it’s damp. What helped me was using longer screws for the hinges, which I also secured with wood glue. This gives the doors more stability and prevents the screws from loosening. I know it might sound a bit complicated, but it has significantly extended the lifespan of my doors. How about you? Have you ever tried using stronger screws?

That sounds interesting, thanks for the tip! Did you use any specific type of screws or just longer screws than the ones included by IKEA? Also, how does fine-tuning work once the screws are glued in place? I’m also curious if there are any particular advantages or disadvantages of these screws that I should be aware of.

For the secure installation of BILLY doors, I recommend the following procedure: 1. Use original or minimal replacement screws of higher quality, preferably stainless steel. 2. Use longer screws as long as they do not damage the material or penetrate the back panel of the shelving unit. 3. Apply wood glue or threadlocker (such as medium-strength threadlocker) to prevent loosening.

It is also important to carefully check the drill holes before attaching the hinges and, if necessary, create new, more precise holes to avoid misalignment or overloading the screws. Alternatively, small metal brackets can be installed inside the shelving unit to provide additional stability.

It is also important to consider the direction of the load. Longer or stronger screws only make sense if the loads are distributed optimally. Simply using longer screws without checking the fastening angle or material thickness can increase the risk of material cracking.

That is basically correct, but I would advise using wood glue sparingly, as it can interfere with later adjustments. A medium strength threadlocker is preferable here, as it allows for disassembly later.

Additionally, I recommend regularly checking the hinges for play and making minor adjustments if necessary to ensure lasting stability.
