This furniture series is well known for its classic design and sturdy construction, but in small apartments, storage is limited and the space can quickly feel cluttered. I am especially interested in any modifications or modular solutions you have used to make Hemnes furniture more space-saving or multifunctional. Are there any proven tips for combining pieces or adding supplementary furniture to make the most of the available space? Perhaps experiences with converting or customizing the furniture to increase its flexibility? Thanks in advance for your ideas!
An efficient optimization of Ikea HEMNES furniture in limited spaces can be achieved through the following principles:
- Make full use of available height: add wall cabinets and shelves above dressers.
- Prefer furniture with built-in storage, such as beds with drawers.
- Utilize the modularity of the series to avoid custom-made solutions by combining individual elements.
- Reduce and declutter to minimize storage needs.
- Use vertical surfaces next to HEMNES furniture for hooks, rails, or shelving systems.
Additionally, I recommend adjusting shelves individually as needed to segment storage space. HEMNES furniture can be modified relatively easily if you have good DIY skills.

What helped me was not just pushing furniture flat against the walls but intentionally leaving some open areas. Small shelves mounted on the wall above the wardrobe add extra storage without making the room feel crowded. Maybe you’ve already tried this? For me, this is what makes the difference between a cramped and a cozy room.
I equipped my HEMNES rug... uh, my bed with drawers, and it freed up a lot of space for me! 😄 Small baskets on the shelves also help not only to store things but to make the room look visually calmer. My tip: Better to have one less piece of furniture that is used smartly than a cluttered room. That way, even a small space stays cozy!
